UNTTED STATES PATENT Crrreac IVILLIAM L. PHILLIPS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO ALICE B. PHILLIPS, OF SAME PLACE.
SPRING BED-BOTTOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 258,595, dated May 30, 1852.
Application filed September 7, 1681. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM L. PHILLIPS, of the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spring Bed-Bottoms and Upholstery, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification.
My invention relates to an improved bottom for holding springs at such places as may be to desired, and when desired the division of same into sections.
Theinvention consists of open-work made of wires crossing each other and woven together, the ends fastened to a frame of sufficient size and strength to keep the wire in place, with spiral springs mounted upon and supported by the same, the wires forming the sides of the open spaces affording rests for base of springs, facilities for fastening them on and varying their location, securing an enduring clean foundation constructed in one or several pieces.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan of the entire bed-bottom. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan of a part thereof, showing the base of a spring.
B is the rim or border, made of about onefourth-inch iron rod, and A the wire forming the spaces 0, as represented, and in this case being one and a half inch on the side, but maybe varied to suit size of springs G. The wire most suitable is No. 11 gage, but it may be varied to suit. The wires are fastened to the rim, which keeps them in place, and the whole made large enough to fit an entire bedstead; or, which is much more convenient, when made in two pieces, the springs are held in place by bent'ends sprung under two or more wires forming sides of the open spaces.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The construction of a woven-wire base having a rigid frame made in one or more parts with spiral springsmounted thereon and se- 45 cured thereto, substantially as described.
\VILLIAM L. PHILLIPS.
