Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PETER H. MELLON, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
METALLIC SPRING-BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 238,703, dated March 8, 1881.
Application tiled December 28, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER H. MELLoN, o'f the city ot' St. Louis, in the State ot' Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Metallic Spring-Beds, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.-
My improvement relates to a spring bed made entirely ot' metal; and it consistsin duplicate iron frames, to which the bottoms and tops of the outer row of the double-spiral springs are secured by wire, the inner rows of springs being connected to each other and to the outer row by means of open-wire links, as shown.
The drawing is a perspective view.
A A are duplicate iron frames, preferably made of rod-iron; but I do not confine myself io the shape of the iron, as rods or bars may be used, nor do I confine myself to solid iron, as tubing may be used, bent round at their corners, as shown, and their ends connected by a collar, B, or by welding, as may be desired.
The outer row, O, ofthe double-spiral springs are connected at top and bottom to the upper and lower frames, respectively, by means of wire ties c. This outer row of springs are also lapsing.
(No model.)
connected to each other by means of open links o of wire. The inner sets ot' doublespiral springs O are also connected together and to the outer row by means of open links of wire.
The upper and lower frames, A A', are connected to each other by wire braces D, to give lateral support to the device. The frames A A are made of iron sufficiently heavy not to give inward when the sprin gs are pressed upon, and thus the springs are at all times kept tight and even.
I am aware that it is old to construct a mattress with light wire binders, and clutches to support the binders to keep them from col- Such binders I do not, therefore, claim.
I claim as my invention- The combination, in a springbed, of the frames A A, braces D, and doublespiral springs O, Connected to each other and to the frames, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
PETER H. MELLON.
