DANIEL B. BECK, OF JACKSON, MICHIGAN.
SPRINGV BED-BOTTOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 245,553, dated August` 9, 1881. Application nlea April 2s, leal. No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL B. PECK, a citizen of the United States, residing near Jackson, in the county of Jackson alld State of Michigan, have invented certain new alld llseful Improvements in-SpringBed-Bottolns; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will ellable others skilled ill the art to which it appertains to malte and use the saine, reference being' had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or iigures ot' reference marked thereon, which i'ornl a part of this specitication.
My invention relates to all improvelnellt in bed-springs; and it eollsists ill the vertical sprillgs A A, horizontal springs B B, links G C, the slats D D, the supporting-springs E E, staples F F, in connection with hooks G G for securing the springs to the slats, the novel arrangement of parts for formin g a double verlical bed-spring, the peculiar structure of the parts for securillg the springs together at their apex upon the sanle plane, alld ill the eolnbination and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter lnore fully shown and described.
ln the drawillgs, Figure lis a plall view. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a vertical section. Fig. 4 is a plall view, showing construction of the links, and Fig. 5 is a plall view of the horizontal springs.
A A represellt spiral wire springs, the hooks G G thereof being driven illtoo the slats D D for rigidly attaching tlleln thereto ill eollnection with staples F F. These springs are also coiled, as shown, to provide therein the small circles u a ill the center of the higher or nlost enlarged part ot' the spirals. These small circles, whicll are located ill a verticalrline with the smaller part or base of the springs, and on the saule plane as the top ot' the bed-bottom, are designed to provide a nleans of securing the vertical springs in position, when they would otherwise be swayed or distorted from position by pressure. This is effected by means of the horizontal springs B B and links C C, each veltical spring being secured therewith, as shown. The links C C hook into the loops of the horizontal springs, and the horizontal springs are relldered elastic by their loops, whose terlninalpoints are bent into hooks for securing the same to the small circles a. a ofthe spiral vertical springs.
The slats D D rest upon the supporting spiral springs E E, alld are guided by the vertical wires b b, which project through orifices in said slats, and transverse bars d d.
The hooks G G, that fasten to the slats, as shown, pass over and rest upon the lower coil ofthe vertical springs, and thus hold them steadfast. Y
The wires forming the sllpporting spiral springs are bent at their upper terminal points, after being projected through the transverse bars d d, ill sucll lnalllleras to secure the springs ill position and prevent'theirwithdrawal 5 and tllese bent ends are concealed by the metallic Vcaps c e, wllicll are provided with the projecting points ff, which are driven vertically into thecross-bars. The vertical su ppoltin g-sprin gs are threaded at the upper parts thereof, and are there secured above the cross bars d d by the nuts e e, alld they project vertically downward, through orifices provided in said cross! bars and slats D D, to the bottom of the springs, and are there coiled in enlarging eonvolutions from their lower extremity upward, and tinally terlninate ill the eyes b b', through which project their vertical stenls. These eyes are caused to clutcll rigidly the rubber tubes T T, and the tubes encircle the vertical supporting-springs, and are desiglled to prevent any creaking noise arising from vibration.
By the peculiar constructioll and arrangelnent of the parts of ln y bed-bottoni great elasticity is obtained, and in all respects a more durable and comfortable article is produced.
What I claim isl. The combination of the links C (l, horizolltal springs B B, and vertical springs A A, substantially as shown, and for the purpose described.
2. YThe vertical springs A A, seellred by the horizontal springs B B alld links C O, incombination with the slats D D, cross-bars d d, and supporting-springs E E, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL B. PEGK.
