Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LA FAYETTE WILDERMUTH, OF NEW LEXINGTON, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN BED-SPRINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 210,479, dated December 3, 1878; application filed October 25, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be 1t known that I, LA FAYETTE WILDER- MU'rH, of New Lenin gton, Ohio, h ave invented a new and Valuable Improvement in Bed- Springs, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which--- Figure l is a perspective view of a bed-bottom with my improvement attached. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through m w.
The object of my invention is to construct a superior bed-spring, which can readily be removed from the slat when desired, and which will be held firmly in position on the slats when in use.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the exact manner in which I have carried it out.
ln the drawings, A represents the frame of a spring bed-bottom B B, the slats, and G (l the springs. These springs are madein pairs, as showninFig.2of-the drawings, and of a single piece of wire, so that they are connected together at their lowest points by the Wire D, of sufficient length to allow the two springs constitutin g one pair to be fitted over and upon a pair of the slats, and thereby hold each other firmly in position.
The adjacent slats may be slipped into or out of the loops at the bottom of each spring without removing the springs from their position in the bed; and I am enabled to remove a single slat or a single pair of springs for the purposes of repair or renewal without disturbing any other part of the bottom.
It is evident from this description that when once my springs are placed in position on the slats, and the slats, in turn, placed in position on the bedstead-bottom, as shown in Fig. 1, it will be impossible forthe springs to work loose and drop off from the slats, or get out of position by Wear.
1 am aware that it is not new, broadly, to construct two spiral springs out of a single wire, or to make such double springs with full loops at their ends in which to slide the slats lengthwise.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The spring-bottom herein described, consisting of the series of double slats and springs, said springs being properly connected at the top, while at the bottom each spring is connected to the slats by an open loop, said loops being continuous on their under sides, and forming the connecting-rod l), as and for the purpose set forth.
LA FAYETTE WILDERMUTH.
