PATENT QFFICE.
FRED A. ZIELKE, OF OSHKOSI-I, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO FRANK J. STEEPS, OF OSHKOSH, W ISOONSIN.
ELASTIC SUPPORT FOR SPRING-BEDS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 794,270, dated July 11, 1905.
Application filed June 8, 1904. Serial No. 211,662.
To all 1071,0117, it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED A. ZIELKE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Oshkosh, in the county of Winnebago and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Supports for Spring Bed-Bottoms, of which the following is a specification.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of an inverted spring-mattress em bodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same on the line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the hanger detached. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a modified form of hanger.
In the drawings, 4 is a suitable frame, upon which is secured a spring wire-fabric mattress of any approved type.
6 is a rectangular frame comprised of flat metal set on edge. to which is secured in any suitable manner a wire mattress fabric 7.
8 is a wire frameof the same dimensions as the frame 6, in which is secured a suitable wire mattress fabric 9.
The frames 6 and 8 are secured together by means of suitable coil-springs, the ends of which are secured in any manner to the wire mattress fabric 7 and 9. The structure formed by the frames 6 and 8 and the coil-springs 10 form a supplemental spring-support for the metal portion of a wire spring-mattress whereby the mattress is given additional support at the point where the greatest weight is imposed thereupon.
In Fig. 3 I have illustrated a supportinghanger whereby the supplemental or strengthening frame is hungfrom the mattress-frame, said support comprising a piece of suitable wire 11 bent to form right-angled hooks 12 and 13 at its respective ends, said hooks being of a shape whereby they are adapted to snugly fit the upper edge of the side bars of the mattress-frame, the major portion of the wire 11 depending upon the outside of the said rails of the frame, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The inner portions of the hooks are continued, as at 14, thence formed into coil-springs 15, thence continued to form a hook 17, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, said hook 17 being of a shape adapted to fit snugly around the flat metal frame 6, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. After the supporting or supplemental spring-frame is assembled in the manner described the hooks 17 are engaged with the frame 6, said frame being formed on edge, 5 5 as described, after which the hooks 12 are hooked over the top edge of the side rails of the mattress-frame, the portion 11 of the support depending upon the outside of the side rails, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
It has been the experience of mattress-spring manufacturers as well as users that the mattress material becomes weakened and distorted at about the middle portion by reason of the greater weight that is imposed upon the mattress at that point, and it will be readily seen that by the use of my invention the mattress fabric is materially strengthened and supported at this point, and by reason of the coilsprings 15, formed in the support, the rein- 7o forcement of the mattress is given a resilient mounting.
It is obvious thatI may omit the coil-springs in the supporting-hanger, as shown in Fig. 4.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with a wire mattress and its frame, of a supplemental mattress-section disposed beneath and in contact with the mattress fabric, said supplemental mattress-section comprising an upper fabric sheet, a lower metallic frame set on edge and a plurality of coil -springs interposed between said fabric sheet and said metallic frame, and means for supporting said mattress-section beneath the 5 main mattress, said means comprising a pinrality of hangers, each hanger consisting of an upper hooked portion engaging the main mattress-frame and a pair of downwardlyprojecting legs having hooks at their end en- 9 gaging the metallic frame of the mattress-section.
The foregoing specification signed this 16th day of April, A. D. 1904.
FRED A. ZIELKE.
In presence of' J. J. MoMANAMY, F. V. IVIGMANAMY.
