W. BULKELEY. SPRING MATTRESS OR BED BOTTOM.
Patented Aug. 8, 1882.

NITED STATES PAT NT Orricai.
WORTHINGTON BULKELEY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
SPRING MATTRESS OR BED-BOTTOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 262,366, dated August 8, 1882.
Application filed February 8, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Woa'rnnveron BULKE- LEY, a resident of Cleveland, county of Guyalioga, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new useful Improvements in Spring Mattresses or BedBot-toms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making'a part of this specification.
My invention relates to spring mattresses or bed-bottoms constructed of coiled springs supported upon a suitable frame, either rigid or adjustable.
it consists of the combination, with the spiral springs, of a single continuous coil of wire interwoven with the upper ends of said springs, so as to connect them in either parallel, transverse, or diagonal lines with an elastic tie, which shall serve to support and retain them properly in an upright position and yet will maintain a perfectly soft, flexible, yielding surface over the entire mattress.
In the accompanying drawing, which presents a top view of my improved spring-mattress, AA A are spiral or conical coiled springs, secured at their smaller ends to a series of supporting-slats, B B, jointed together by transverse strips 0 O or their-equivalents.
D D are single continuous spiral coils of wire, forming elastic metallic cords, which are intertwined in the upper coil of each of the spiral springs A A in regular order, so as to connect and tie them together in regular series along the outer edges of the mattress and in transverse lines, either straight and paral- 101 or diagonal and irregular, as appears in the drawing. These elastic metallic spiral cords are connected with the upper end of each spring by intertwining the coil of the cord with the coil of the spring, so that the former shall make several turns around the latter, thus forming a yielding, yet eftective, joint between the two. By this means any number of springs are coupled together by transverse springs so interwoven therewith as to form, in effect, a continuous elastic surface, strong and durable, yet extremely pliable, constituting a desirable spring-mattress.
1 am aware that intersecting series of spiral spring-bands have been combined with helical or spiral bed-springs, one of the intersecting bands at each bed-spring being led under the upper coil of said spring, and the other intersecting band passing over said coil and under said band, so as to interlock and thus unite the bands with the springs; and I do not claim broadly the combination of spiral spring-bands with helical bed-springs.
My invention is designed to dispense with intersecting spiral bands, and to efi'ect an intimate and effective connection of a single continuous spiral coil with a series of springs by the intertwining of the spiral coil with the helical spring in manner as described.
I do not herein claim the combination and arrangement ofthe slats supporting the springs either with hinge-bars or with transverse strips, as shown in thedrawing, as I have made said improvements the subject of separate applications for Letters Patent, filed February 6, 1882.
What I claim as new, and desire -to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the conical springs of a spring-mattress, of one or more single continuous spiral connecting-coils, led two or more times around the top coil of each of the conical springs to form, without extraneous fastenings, a continuous elastic bearing-surface, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
In testimony whereofI have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
