SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,206, dated March 2, 1886. Application tiled September 30, 1885. Serial No. 178,652. (No model.)

To aZZ whom it may concern: I

Be it known that I, MARVIN G. SILVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Brunswick, in the county of Middlesex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Spring Bed- Bottoms; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form apart ofthis specification.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of this invention, and is a top view. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a detail, and shows the spring-catch at the foot of the bed. Fig. 4is a perspective view ofthe springcatch.

This invention has relation to springbeds; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the frame of the bed-bottom,which is usually ofrectangular form,having the transverse head-bar B and the foot-bar 0 connecting the side rails, D D.

E is a middle transverse bar, which is secured to the lower portions of the side rails at about the middle portion of the bed-bottom. This bar serves as abearing or support for the spiral springs F, which are secured thereto, extending in series transversely along said bar from side to side of the bed-bottom, the tops of the springs being about level with the upper edges of the head and foot boards above mentioned. The tops of the springs F are connected to a transverse wire, G, by means of loops a, formed on the upper ends of said springs, and the wire G is stayed in position flexible fastenings H, which are attached to the side rails of the bed-bottom.

Upon the transverse wire G rests the middle portion of the bottom wires, K, which extend longitudinally, and are attached by their ends to short spiral springs L at the head and foot boards. The outer endsof these spiral springs L are secured to the head and foot boards by means of staples, or in any proper manner, while their inner ends are formed with loops to receive the looped ends of the bottom wires, K. Stay-wires N are also secured to the head and foot boards in connection with the spiral springs L. Each spring L is provided with astay-wire,which extends lengthwise and a little beyond the inner end of the opening, being then formed into a loop which encircles the bottom wire, which is attached to said spring. This loop b is made smaller than the spring L, and serves as a stop to prevent the spring from being extended by pressure beyond a certain distance. In this manner protection is afforded to the springs to prevent them from being injured by undue pressure on any one of the wires. The adjustable head-rest P has side arms, 0, and a transverse bar, d, connecting said side arms. To the bar (I are attached the outer ends of the wires e of the head-rest, their inner ends being looped, as atf, and connected by means of said loops to the short spiral springs g, which are attached to the edge portion of the transverse bar, usually to the same transverse bar E which supports the spiral springs F. The side arms of the adjustable rest are pivoted to the side rails at h, and are provided with ratchetarms is, which are pivoted thereto, and engage loop-catches Z, secured to blocks or supports at on theinside of the side rails of the bed-bottom. The ends of the pivoted ratchets are provided with cords n, which extend through bearings of the head-bar of the frame, and serve to afford means for disengaging the ratchets from the catches when a readjustment of the head-restis desired. The springs of the wires of the head-rest give sufficient play for the adjustment, tightening the wires as the rest is raised into higher position, and is liable to be subjected to heavier strain.

To the foot-board are secured the springcatches V in series, these catches extending along the outer face of the foot-board and having their spring tongues 2 turned upward and then inward against the foot-board. By means of these spring-catches the bedclothes can be held in place at the foot with suificientfirmness to prevent the sleeper from disarranging them. At the sametime they form no obstruction to the operation of making up the bed.
