IMPRO'V'ED BED-BOTTOM.
Tq 'whom it 'mag/.concerm Be it known that I, J. JOHN HARRIS, o'f Pewamo, in the county of Ionia, and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Iinprovmentin Bedsteads; and I do'declare that the following isa trueJ and aecu rate description thereof, reference 'being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and being a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention.
Figure 2 is a section, showing the hinged bar.
Like letters indicate like parts in each figure.
The nature of this invention relates to the construction of a bedstead, Whose supports will act as springs, sui-mounted by hinged cross-bars, to assist iu giving elasticity'to the bed-bottom.
A, in the drawings, represents cross-bars, which act as the foundation of the -bedsteath and may be supported `upon casters, if desired.
B is a series of C-shaped springs, bent in the form shown in the drawings, one end of which is attached to the cross-bars A, while theiropposite ends/are secured to other cross-bars, D.
These cross-bars are made in sections, 1, 2, 3, 4, which are hinged together, as shown.
E are thelongitudinal slats forming the bottom, their ends resting upon the hinged cross-bars, and so arranged that one or more of said slats rest upon the sections of said crossbars, between the hinges 5.
F are the side rails, attached at each end to the ends of the hinged cross-bars.
G are rigid hooks, secured to the sides of the bedstead, by means of which, in their engagement with pins H, in the ends of the head-board I, the said headboard is secured in place, and can be removed at pleasure.

The whole forms a durable, cheap, and elastic bedstead and bottom combined.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, .is-
1. The cross-bars D, when' formed in hinged sections, in combination with the bent springs B, substantially as set forth. v
2. The combination ofthe cross-bars A, bent springs B, cross-bars D, hinged in sections, slats E, side-rails E, hooks G, pins H, head-board I, andstays J, when arranged and operating substantially as set forth.`
