TO ALL WHOM IT MAY OONOERN:

Bc it known that we, E. G IBBSand O W. GIBBS, of Richland Centre, in the county of Richland, and State of' Wisconsin, have invented a new and improved'SpringBed Bottom;- and we do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part' of this specification'.

Our invention has for its object to furnish an improved spring-bed bottom, simple and durable in construction, which will not allow ythe' head part to tip down, and which will be noiseless, easy, and comfortable in use, Whether lain upon by a light or heavy person, and it consists in the construction and combination of the various parts, as hereinafter more fully described.

A are the posts, B are the side rails, and C are the endrails of the bedstead, about the construction of which parts there is nothing-new. v l

D are two cross-slats, placed at the head and foot of'the bedstead, andthe ends of which rest in notches in the side rails, It, of the bedstead, or in longitudinal slats attached to the inner sides of.said side' rails.

E are longitudinal spring-slats, the ends of which rest upon the cross-slats D, where they are secured in place by staples F, through which the ends of the said slats E pass, and the ends of which pass through the cross-slats D, and are clinched -or otherwise secured upon their lower sides, the said staples being made sufii- -ciently large to allow the slats E to move slightly in them as they are sprung in use, while at the` same time holding the said slots securely in place. A

G are longitudinal slats placed directly above the slats E, and the ends of which pass through and are supported by the metallic loops H. The ends of the loops H are passed through the slots I, and have their ends clinched or otherwise secured upon their outer sides.

The slots I are secured to the end rails C ofthe bedstead by screws or other convenient means. The loops H are then bent down into proper position to receive the ends ofthe slats G, and are covered with clothor other similar material, so as to prevent all noise when the bedstea'd isin use. A

J are coiled-wire springs, which we prefer to make in the form of half-sofa springs, andtwo of which are placed between each pair ofv spring-slats,`E Gin such positions as to be beneath, or as near as may be beneath the shoulders and hips of the person lying uponthe bed. The lower ends of the springs J are passed through the slats E, and are clinched or otherwise secured upon their under sides. The lower coil of the springs J rests upon'and is'secured tothe said slats E by staples, as shown in iig. I. The upper ends or points ofthe springs J pass into or through holes in the upper slats G, as shown in tig. 1. The slats G should be made considerably lighter than the slats E, and should be so arranged in connection with the slats I, loops H, and springs J, that when left free their middle parts should be sprung or slightly arched upward, as shown in iig. 1.

We claim as new, and `desire to secure by Letters Patent@ v Aniiinprovcd spring-hed bottom, formed by the combination o'f the cross-slats D, staples Fulongitudinal spring slats E, coiled-wire spring J, longitudinal spring-slats G, wire loops H, wound with cloth or its equivalent, and cross-slats I, with each other and with the side rails B and end rails C, ot' the bedstead, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
