- TTED STATES J-AMES POLLITT, OF EDON, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING BED-BOTTONIS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,726, dated August 12, 1873; application filed December 21, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that `I, JAMEs PoLLITT, of Edon, in the county of l/Villiams and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved' Spring Bed-Bottom, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a longitudinally-vertical section of my improved spring bed-bottom. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is a detail longitudinal section on the line C O, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a top view of one ci' the springs.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention consists in a new form of springs for counectin g them to the upper slats and to the straps thereof, and in the new general combination of parts, all as hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawing, the letter A represents the bottom rails of a bedstead, there being three such bottom rails, preferably, employed in one bed. B B are the top` slats, placed trans versely upon three rows of springs, O C, that stand on the rails A. Each slat, B, is inortised, near the end, to receive a loop, a, from each spring beneath, except from the middle springs, which ,have loops b that lap around the slats B, as shown in Fig. 3. D D are straps fastened to the head and foot pieces of the bed-bottom, and passing through the loops a of the side row of springs, and over the slats, so that the said straps will serve to prevent the loops a from being drawn down through the mortises of the slats.
The slats, being thus supported by the springs, are prevented from being laterally displaced, since the sprin gs pass bodily through them.
The loops b on the middle row of springs, and embracing the slats at the middle, form holders for securing each slat in its proper place, and dispense with the necessity of using a center strap, D. These loops make the bed lie easier by not having a strap in the middle, and, furthermore, give the center springs more freedom of motion.
E is a strap, which passes from the head end or" the bed over the rst cross-Slat to the irst spring in the center row to give a greater degree of steadiness t0 that end of the bed.
On each bottom rail, A, are secured as many pairs of clasps, d d, as there are springs O on such rail, two clamps overlapping the lower convolution of each spring, as shown. These several clasps form holders by which the springswill be evenly held upon the lower rails, and are a very convenient and practical mode of attachment for the springs, allowing them ready application and removal.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The springs O, provided at their upper ends with loops a that t mortises in the crossslats B, in combination with said cross slats B, strap D, and head and foot pieces, arranged as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the central row of springs having loop I) to receive and hold the cross-slats B at the center with the side row of springs C, the cross-slats B, and straps-D, all arranged as' and for the purpose specified.
