HENRY E. MAKER, OF SOUTH FRAMINGHAM, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPRlNG BEfi-BQTTQMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,844, dated November 5, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY E. MAKER, of South Framinghain, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spring Bed-Bottoms, of which the following is a specitioation:
The object of this invention is to furnish a cheap, simple, and durable spring bottom for beds; and it consists in the peculiar arrangement of springs and mode of connecting them with the slats, hereinafter more fully shown and described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a top or plan view of my improved spring bed-bottom. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of Fig. 1 taken on the line 00 00. Fig. 3 is a vertical crosssection of Fig. 1 taken on the line y y.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspon ding parts.
A is the bedstead, which, like ordinary bedsteads, is provided with longitudinal strips B upon the side rails, upon which the spring bottom is supported. 0 represents the spring bottom, consisting of springs D, vertical pins E,
slats F, and cross-bars G. The ends of the cross-bars G rest upon the strips B of the bedstead and are, of course, at right angles therewith. The springs D are made in pairs and from a single piece of wire, and are attached to the under side of the cross-bars by staples H, seen in Fig. 3. The ends of the pins E rest upon the wire I, which connect each pair of 'ends of the slats at the head of the bed may be raised or adjusted to suit the occupant of the bed. The middle cross-bar is placed nearer to the head than it is to the foot so as to more evenly support the body. The slats F are placed longitudinally or at right angles with the crossbars on the tops of the pins E, and are in themselves elastic, so that they give or conform to the tension of the springs and weight on the bed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A spring bed bottom, consisting of the springs D, pin E, slats F, stop-pin J, and crossbars G, arranged substantially as shown and described.
HENRY E. MAKER.
