I. ORUZAN.
SPRING BED BOTTOM. No. 269,641. Patented Dec. 26, 1882.
Urrno STATES PA ISAAC GRUZAN, OF WAGONERS STATION, INDIANA.
SPRING BED-BOTTOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,641, dated December 26, 1882.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC CRUZAN. a citizen of the United States, residing at Wagoners Station, in the county of Miami and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Spring Bed-Bottom, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
Figure l is a top view of my improved spring bed-bottom. Fig. 2 is a side view. Figs. 3 and etare detailviews oftheedge and cornersprings, and Fig. 5 is a perspective detail view of the adjustable head-rest.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
'Ihisinvcntion relates to spring bed-bottoms; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A A rep resent the longitudinal and B B the transverse slats, constituting the main frame of my im proved bed-bottom.
U is an adjustable head-rest, consisting of longitudinal slats D and transverse slats E. The inner ends of the slats D are fitted between and adjoining-the slats A of the main frame, to Which they are hinged by a wire or rod, F, passing through transverse perforations G in said slats A, and D, thus making a very simple and durable hinge, which does not weaken the slats. The head-rest 0 has two supports, formed of wire bent so as to form T-shaped loops H, the ends of which have eyes I, hinged upon a transverse wire, J, in the head-rest. The heads K of the supporting-loops II engage racks or ratchets L, formed of crimped wires, suitably attached to the longitudinal slats A of the main frame. The loops H H are connected by a cord, l\1, passing through perforations N in the rear ends of the slats 1). By means of this cord the said loops or supports may conveniently be simultaneously operated or released from the -ratchets L when it shall be desired to lower thehead-rest.
The springs of my improved bed-bottom may be secured in any suitable manner upon the slats B and E of the main frame and headrest. Of said springs the inner ones, 0, may he of any suitable well-known construction. Those at the ends and edges, which are denoted by letter P, have their upper coils formed at their outer edges with straight oblong loopsQ, and the cornersprings R have their upper coils formed with angular loops S. The loops Q and S of adjoining springs are connected by links T, thus forming continuous straight edges to the bed-bottom, which prevent the edges of the mattress from sagging. The angular loops S are connected with the corners of the frames by coiled springs U which support said angular loops and the corners of the mattress.
The several springs constituting the bed bottom are connected by circular rings V, one of which is placed between each section of four springs, and connected with the upper coils of adjoining springs by links W. In this manner a smooth and even surface is produced, preventing the mattress from sagging between the springs, which are mutually braced.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat- .entof the United States 1. The combination, with the hinged headrest, of the T-sbaped wire loops or supports hinged upon a transversewire in said headrest, as set forth. v
2. The crimped-wire racks or ratchets L, suitably secured to the longitudinal slats of the main frame, as set forth.
3. In a bed-bottom, the edge springs P, the top coils of which are provided at their outer edges with straightoblongloops Q, as set forth.
I. In a spring bed-bottom, the corner-springs It, the upper coils of which are provided with .angular loops S, as and for the purpose set forth.
5. In a spring bed-bottom, the combination, with the corner-springs having their upper coils provided with angular loops S, of the coils U, connecting the corners ofthe bed-fra me with said angular loops, which are thereby supported, as set forth.
6. In a bed-bottom, the combination, with the frame, of the inner springs, O, the edge springs, P, the top coils of which'are provided with straightoblongloops Q,the corner-springs It, the'top coils of which are provided with angular loops S, and links T, connecting said loops Q and S, as set forth. 4
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
Witnesses: ISAAC ORUZAN.
A. V. House, A. EN'rsMrNeER.
