Be it known that I, AS. L. SQUTHARD, of Rock Island, in the county of Rock Island, and State of Illinois,

have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bed-Bottoms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled inv the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in-which- Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of a. bedstead having my improved bed-bottom attached.

This invention relates to an improvement in bed-bottoms, and consists in an arrangement of' compound spiral springs attached to the under side of the bed-bottom, and resting upon cross-pieces set in the bedstcad, as hereinafter more particularly described. i t

A represents a bedstead, in whicha bed-bottoni, B, formed of slats a a, running lengthwise of the bed, attached at the head and foot tolcross-bars bla, which rest on springs C C, placed between the bars, and similar bars c c, which set within the rails of the bedstead on projections or shoulders. The springs CC are formed of pieces 'of wire, coiled into spirals, e e, at their ends, and bent to form loops or yokes d d in the middle. The ends of the springs are fastened to the crss-bars b b c c, and the yokes of each pair of springs attached above and below on the bars are confined together by a tubo or sleeve, m, and they are so placed that the cross-bars b I c c shall be spread apart when the springs are expanded, so that when a weight is placed on the bed-bottom they may be compressed, and thus form 'elastic springs. i

Having described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by-Letters Patent-- The springs C C, constructed as described, consisting of the wires coiled into spiralsc e at their ends, said spirals fitting upon loops secured to the slats b c, tl1e centres of said wires bent to forln loops or yokes d, connected by the tube m, all arranged as described for the'purpose specified.
