Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
JOHN H. ALMOND, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVED SPRING BED-BOTTOM.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 86,120, dated January 26, 1869.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. ALMOND, of the city of Louisville, county of Jefferson, and State of Kentucky, have invented a new, and useful Improvement in Elastic Spring Bed- Bottoms 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the above improvement, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and letters of reference marked thereon, in which the drawing shows a perspective view of the top of the bed-bottom.
The nature of my invention or improvement consists in a slat or slats made of girting or serge, having attached to the ends, by an iron or wooden clasp or buckle, a piece of gumelastic tube, either round or flat, of any suitable length, and of sufficient strength to support the weight required, and said gum-elastic tubes having a piece of the same material of which the slats are :made attached to the outer ends by an iron clasp, in the same manner as those above mentioned, for the purpose of attaching them to the frame, which is done by passing them through a mortise or by tackin g them to the frame or otherwise.
The above-named iron clasps are fastened together by passing an iron ring over the ends, which holds them permanently in their places.
A is the frame, and is made of wood or any suitable material, and of any required size or shape, having a mortise or hole through the ends at B, through which the slats C pass,
and are fastened either by tacking or otherwlse.
C C C O are the outer ends of those parts of the slats by which they are attached to the frame A, either single, double, or otherwise.
E E E E are the gum-elastic tubes, either round or fiat, attached to the girting or serge slats D D D D by the iron or wooden clasps F F at the one end, and to the gum-e1astic tubes E E E E, in the same manner, at the other, making one continuous slat, either single, double, or otherwise, extending the whole length or breadth of the bed-bottom, having the gum-elastic springs E E E E inserted in each end, or in the middle of the same, which operates as a spring and renders the whole elastic and easily operated, and is so simple that all that is necessary, after the frame and slats are made and fitted to the proper size, is to place it on the bedstead, and it is ready for use; therefore,
What I claim as my invention or improvement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The gum-elastic springs E E E E, either round, iat, or tubular, in combination with the girting or serge slats D D D D and O C O C, the iron or wooden clasps F F, and the rings H, when arranged, constructed, used, and operating in the manner set forth.
