INIPROVED MEANS FOR SECURING- SPRINGS TO SLATS QF BED-BOTTOMS.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same* To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, Z. S. CRAGRAFT, of Lacan, in vthe State of Illinois, have, invented a new and useful Improvement in Spring-Bed Bottoms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact;

description of the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I now proceed to describe its constructionjand operation.

Similar letters in the drawings refer to like parts.

A represents the side and ends of an ordinary bedfraine. Two cross-bars, e a, suitably supported at their ends upon the sidelpieces A, serve as foundations for the semi-elliptic springs b, the connection between said cross-bars and springs being eiiected in any suitable manner. The springs/ofv which there may be vfivel or more on each cross-bar, sustain upon their upper ends the slats d; audit is upon the means of connectingsaid slats and springs that I desire to obtain-a patent.

Such connection is effected in the following manner: Through suitable orifices in the slats d, of which there are four in each slat, are passed the ends of metallic coupling-pieces, e, the ends of each coupling-piece pass-` ing downward through two of the aforesaid orifices, and

, being then bent` around, so as to clasp and firmly secure the ends ofthe springs b, which are placed between the oriiices, on the undersides of the slats el. The connection thus eifeeted is simple and eiiicient, and the whole arrangement foi-nis an excellent attachment to bedsteads.

I ani aware that the springs have been fastened to the slats and cross-pieces of the bedstead by pins, but when such i'astenngs are used, the springs frequently are turned upon the pin-connections as pivots, and the springs become misplaced, which is prevented in my invention by the employment of the bent portions or -lips t/ c', which are made broad, and bent securely over the upper end ofthe spring b.

Having thus fully described my invention,
