Description

AUG-U STUSW, NEW ELL S 73744 KWQfiUMEQTTONk v PATENTED JAN 28 I868 @nitrh tetra guest @ffirt.
AUGUSTUS W. NEWELL, OF BRADFORD, PENNsYLv'ANIA.
Letters Patent No. 73,744, dated January 28, 1868.
IMPROVED SPRING-BED BOTTOM.
Know all men that I, AUGUSTUS W. NEWELL, of Bradford, in the county of McKean, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a spring-Bed Bottom; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, amLbeing a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to construct a bed-bottom that will possess the required elasticity, be easy of construction, economical, and present no points for the harboring of vermin.
To elfect this, I construct as many springs as may be desirable, bent in the form of the springs A, all in one piece, extending from the points B. These springs are attached to cross-bars C, by any suitable method, and casters D may be placed under the cross-bars. E are braces attached to the front and-rear slats or springs A, at one end, as shown, and to which is fastened the head-board F. At the opposite'end are fastened, in a similar manner, the braces G, to which is attached the foot-board H.
These springs and braces I construct of any suitable material strong and elastic enough for the purpose. I connect the springs A, by suitable webbing, or other suitable material, as at I.
By these means I manufacture a springdied bottom, simple and strongin its construction, combining comfort and economy, and which can be used as abedstead or not, as may be desired, as the casters and head and foot-board may be attached or detached at pleasure; The springs may be made of iron, steel, or wood, as may be deemed best, and they can be as well used in the construction of lounges and chairs.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is The combination of the braces E G, the boards F H, with the springs A, the cross-bars C, the casters D. and the webbing I, when constructed and operating substantially as and for the purposes described.
AUG. W. NEWELL. Witnesses GEORGE RUHLANDT, JAMEs LAIDLAW.
