Be itknown that I, S. R. ROSCOE, of Obion county, Tennessee, have invented new and useful Improvement on a,Sofa-Bedstead; and I'hereby declare that the following is a full, clean, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and tothe letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in constructing a. sofa, so that it may be a lounge, a sofa, or a hedstead, just as the party using it may desire. It is an improvement on the sofa-bed, patented to me, May 14, 1867, which could be used as abed or lounge only. l
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
The cushions D and E', as presented in Figure 4, represent a doubled-cushioned settee or lounge. When the cushion D is raised from the cushion E, as in Figure 5, the -finishedoretulfed portion of the cushion would be turned from the cushion E, and in Figure 6 it would be turned towards the Hoor, but this is obviated by the cushion D being made to revolve within its frame a a, Figures 1 and 2, and occupy the position shown in gs. 5 and 6.
The couplings m n, figs. 5 and 6, serve to control and regulate the movement of the cushion D, as it is raised from the cushion E to'form the back of the sofa, gs. 5 and 2, or of the bed, figs. 3 and 6.1 These couplings also form the rear frame ofthe article, when used as a settee or lounge. When the cushion D is raised to a right angle with the cushion E, it is there secured in position, and forms the back of the sofa. Itis secured by the hooks e e, iig. 2, and` steadied by the couplings m n, thus forming a very complete sofa. for parlor use. When used as a bedstead, the cushion D is thrown back, as seen in figs. 3 and 6, where it is caught and rmly held by the sections B B, which swing back on hingespp, tig. 6, and which have eyesb b in which fasten the hooks ci ci, figs. Zand 3, attached to the frame a of the cushion D. The sections B B, when extended, figs. 3 and 6, form a complete and convenient head and foot-board for the bedstead, and also furnish the required legs or supports for the same.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is l The combination of the cushions D and E with the folding head-boards A and B, the hooksd'd, the eyes b b, and the couplings m n., all constructed and operating substantially as and for the purpose described.
