Description

Inn
. N. PETERS. FHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. D Cy JAMEsLEE, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
Letters Patent No. 92,977, (lated July 27, 1869.
IMPRoveD CHAIR The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES LEE, of New York, in
the county of New York, and State of New York,
have invented anew and useful Improvement in Chairs; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of my improved chair,
taken through the line :v x, g. 2.
Figure 2 is a front view of the same, partly in section, through the line'y y, Iig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish animproved chair, which shall be simple in construction, strong and durable, and, at the same time, so constructed and arranged as to fit closely to.and support the lower part of the sitters back, which chairs, constructed in the ordinary manner, leave wholly unsupported; and
It consists in the construction and combination of various parts of the chair, as hereinafter more fully described.
A represents the frame of the chair, the side parts and cross-bars of which are secured to each other by screw-bolts B, screwing into nuts O, let into the said cross-bars, as shown in figs. 2, so that the parts of -th'e chair may be firmly and strongly connected toeach other, without the use of glue. bolts maybe ornamented, or they may have knobs attached to them, corresponding with the mateiial of the chair.
D is the seat-framethe front cross-bar of which rests upon the front cross-bar of the chair-frame, to which it may be connected by dowel-pins, or in any other convenient manner.
To the lower part of the'rear cross-bar of the seatf'rame D is hinged the lower edge of' the board or wide bar E.
The upper edge of the board E is connected withthe front cross-bar of the seat-frame by straps or strips of webbing, F, to which the upholstering or cushion is attached.`
G are springs connected withthe seat-frame D and board E, to push the upper edge of the board E back The heads of theV as' soon as the weight of the sitter has been removed.,v
H is the upholstering or cloth back of the chair, the upper end of which is rmly and securely attached to the upper cross-bar of the chair, and the lower end of which is irmly andy securely attached to the rear side of the board E, so that the rear` part of the seat is supported by the cloth back or upholstering H.
By this construction, the weight of the person sitting upon the chair draws the upper edge of the hinged board E forward, which movement of the said board, draws the cloth back or upholstering H in closely v against thelower part of the back of the person sitting upon the chair, fully supporting all' parts of the back. f
I is a curtain, the lower edge of which is weighted,
and the upper edge of which is attached to the rod J,
the ends of which enter recesses in the forward ends of, the .arms K. The other ends of the arms K are secured to the upper part of the side frames of the chair-back by the same screw-bolts by which the said side frames are secured to the upper cross-bar of the said chair-back.
When-this device is used with a chair having rockers attached to it, as the chair rocks backward and forward, the curtainI swings back and forth over the-v head of the person sitting upon the chair, acting as an automatic fan. v When used with a chair not provided with rockers, it may be operated by an arm and cord connected with the rod J.
When not required for use, the curtain L and rod J are detached, and the arms K either turned down, to lie along the side frame of the chair, or the arms K may also be detached, as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to seclu'e byl Letters Patenty f The -seat-frame'D, hinged board E, straps or webbing F, springs G, and' upholstering or cloth back H,
in combination with each other and with the chair-I frame A, secured together by Athe screw-bolts B and nuts C, substantiallyas herein shown and described,
and forthe purpose set forth. I
The above-specification of my invention si me, this 11th day of May, 1869.
` JAMES LEE.
