Description

To all whom it may concern: i
' WILHELM CHARLES rorrnnnrncnn, or. new' YORK, N. Y.
Letters Patent No. 101,764, (lated April 12', 1870. f
IMPROVED EASY-CHAIR.
The Schedule referred. to in these Letters Patent and making part of the name.
Be it known that I, WILHELM Cnannnslorrnn- DIEGHE, of` the city of New York, in the county and State ofNew York, have invented a new and improved Easy-Chair; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification.
Figure l represents a vertical longitudinal section of my improved easy-chair.
Figure 2 is a detail plan or top view, partly in section, of the same, taken on the plane of the line :t at, iig. 1. l
Figure 3 is a vertical transverse scctionof the same,
plan view of the readingarm-rests extended at the will of the person using it.
` The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described.
In the drawing, the frame-work of the chair only is represented, not the upholstering of the same.
A A in the drawing are the front legs of my im? proved chair.
B B are the-rear legs of the same.
These legs are secured to the seat-frame C.
D is the frame of t-he chair-back.
The. same is, by pins aa, pivoted to the frame C, so that it can be swung to be more or less reclined.
The frame D has arms, b, extending downward below the pivots a. v
E is the foot-rest, hinged to the front of the frame C.,
1t -has backward-projecting ears, c, which are, by means of rods, F F, connected with the arms b of the chair-back. Thus, as the foot-rest hangs nearly vertical when the back is almost upright, as shown in fig.
1, the foot-rest will be inclined in the same degree as the back when the latter' is reclined. The dotted lines in fig. l indicate the respective changed positions of the two parts.
From the front part of the frame C project the fixed standards G ofthe arm-rests.
The arm-rests H are pivoted to the flame D of the back, and are make hollow, to slide on bars, I, that are pivoted to the standards G.
Spring bolts, J, are secured to the arm-rests, and
lock in notches of the bar I, serving to hold the rests in suitable positions. Thus the bolts J lock not only the plane of section beingl indicated by the line y y,
-the arm-rests, but, also, the back D andthe foot-rests in every desired position. The more the back is reeliued,.the more will the arm-rests be extended, and,l
when extended, the bars I form part-s of said rests.
rlhe foot-rest E is braced in every position by means of links, L L, .which extend from the ears c to the lower end of the foot-rest, as shown. l
,The real foot-support M is a platform, pivoted to the lower endof the frame E, and projecting forward. This platform can, however', be swung in line with tne frame E, to extend the same,l and carries another platform, N, which is hinged to it, as shown. The platform n rests upon M, as in fig. I, when M is at right angles to E. But when the foot-rest is extended,
by swinging the plate M in line with E, the plateN is swung up at right angles to M, as indicated by dotted .lines in iig. 1.
Suitable catches, d, lock the platforms M N in the desired positions.
A spring, T, is secured to the frame C, and serves to throw the back B forward, whenever the same is released from the bolts J.
the arm O.
A notched segment, S, is secured to the under side of the plate I?, sothat it can swing at its ends, and vserves to lock the same on the arm O in any desired inclined position.
A spring, h, holds the segment against the arm O,
and keeps the desk` in the desired position. The desk can thus swing on its hi'nges whenever the segment is released from the arm 0, and can then locked in any desired position.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and `desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1'. The improved adjustable easy-chair above described, consisting of legs A B, seat-frame O, standardsv G,'pivoted hollow sliding arm-rests H, bars I, spring bolts J, pivoted back-frame D, having arms I), springs T, rods F, ears "c, link-braces L, pivoted footrests-E provided with pivoted platform M, hinged platform N, and catches d, all relatively arranged, as and for the purpose specified.
2. In combination with the above, the arm O, hinge f R, notched segment S, spring h, and reading-desk P, as and for the purpose specified. v
WILHELM CHARLES POPPENDIECHE.
