INVALID-BED REST.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 229,286, dated June29, 1880.

' To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN V. B. TOWERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the county of Washington and District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Invalid Bed Rests; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.

My invention relates to head-sections or reclining body-rests for beds or lounges; and it consists in the combinations of devices hereinafter described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved head-section. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same in a horizontal position; and Fig. 3, a side view, the frames B, G, and D being elevated.

A, B, O, and D are frames formed of side bars connected together by proper rounds or cross-bars a. The frame 0 is pivoted to the frame A at c, the frame D is pivoted to the frame 0 at d, and the frame B is pivoted or The frame D is provided with teeth to engage the hook or pin G, projecting from the frame B. The frame 0 is provided at its upper end witha crossbar, E, upon which is mounted a series of spiral springs, F, having upon their upper ends a similar bar, E. These springs are secured to the bars E, and are held in position by means of bolts running through slots in the bars, or they may be secured in any other suitable manner.

Frame B is covered with any suitable material, and may be upholstered or padded in any desirable manner.

The operation of my device is as follows: The whole device is laid upon the bed or lounge, occupying the upper or head portion thereof. When it is desired to adjust the de vice the frames B and G are simultaneously raised upon the pivots b and 0 toward a vertical position by means of the frame D. This movement causes the springs to be pressed against the frameB, and the teeth of the frame D to ride over the pins G on the frame B, so that one of them will always be in position to catch on said pin G and prevent the frames B and 0 from resuming a horizontal position.

The device Will be operative without the springs F, and a chain or other adjusting device may be used instead of the frame D.

The frames 0 and B may be attached to the side'rails of the bedstead, if desired, in which case the fixture will be permanent.

As above described, the device may be laid upon or removed from the bed at pleasure.

The frame D is extended forward of the frame B for the purpose of adjustment, and also to serve as arm-rests for the occupant of the bed when reclining on the frame B. The under sides of the side pieces composing the frame B are slightly curved from near the center to the upper ends, to allow the upper bar, E, to rest evenly and to travel readily without straining or twisting the springs F.

It will be seen that, no matter at what angle the frame B may be placed, it is only necessary to draw the frame 0 up to it and secure it thereto by the adjusting device, when a reliable and comfortable back-rest will be obtained. 7

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A head-section for beds or lounges, consisting of a base-frame, A, and frames B and O, pivoted thereto at a distance apart, the frame B resting upon the upper end of frame 0, and an adjusting device, substantially as described, connecting said frames B and O, intermediate of their points ofsupport and above said frame A, whereby the frame B is adjusted and held in any desired position.

2. The combination of the frame A, the frames B and O, pivoted thereto at b and c, and the frame D, pivoted to the frame 0 at d, and provided with teeth to engage upon the pins G on frame B, as and for the purpose set forth.

3. The combination of the frame A, the frames B and G, pivoted thereto at a distance apart, the springs F, interposed between the frames B and G, and an adjusting device, substantially as described, connecting said frames B and 0 intermediate of their ends, as and for the purpose set forth.
