UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH B. WELSH AND HARRY TRUDELL, OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.
COMBINED CHAIR AND COUCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 259,954, dated June 20, I882.
Application filed March 3,1882. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOSEPH B. WELSH and HARRY TRUDELL, of Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Chairs and Couches, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description,
reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming part of this specification.
Our invention relates to reclining chairs which are adapted to be con verted in tocouches; and our invention consists of certain novel feavtures of construction, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a vertical section of our improved chair, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section showing the chair converted into a couch.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a curved frame, forming the back and seat of the chair, which are to be upholstered in the usual manner, and are supported upon a base, B, consisting of side pieces connected by rounds. The frame A is pivoted to the rear part of-the base B atf, and the standards 0, which sup- I F, which consist of plates having rearwardprojecting points or pins, are also pivoted near their centers to the forward ends of two bars, Gr, so that by the'movement of the said bars the catches F shall be oscillated to throw them in and out of engagement with the plates 13)..
The bars G, near their rear ends, are provided with retainin g-sprin gs H, which are connected to the base B in such manner as to draw the said bars rearward to hold the catches F in engagement with the perforated plates E. The rear ends of the bars G are pivoted to the short ends of levers I, which are pivoted to the base in such manner that the oscillation of the levers will operate the bars.
The upper or'long ends of the levers I are provided with serrated surfaces i, which are held in contact with serrated plates j on the back of the chair by the tension of springs H, so that pressure against the back of the chair will not oscillate the levers, while the latter also serve to brace the back.
A shaft, K, having crank-arms at the ends is to be supported transversely at the back of the chair, and provided with an arm, Z, at the center or other convenient part, by which the shaft shall be oseillated'to move the levers I, the crank-arms being moved against the levers, and thus throwing them out of engagement with the serrated plates j. As soon as the levers are thrown out of engagement with the said plates the back of the chair may be turned down to form a couch, while the seat, which thus becomes elevated, forms a headrest. A cord, 1, may be attached to the arm I and passed over one or more sheaves to one side of the chair, where it maybeconveniently reached.
The top of the back is provided with a folding extension, M, which is hinged thereto, and provided with pivoted legs m at the sides, which are adapted to be folded and held on the under side by pins, while the extension is provided with a staple, with which a hook on the back engages to hold the same in a folded position. 1
The extension may be dispensed with and the legs at secured to the sides of the back, if desired.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1 The combination, with the chair-frame A, having perforated platesE and serrated plates J, and the supporting-base B, of the springactuated bars G, connected at their forward ends with pivoted catches, which are adapted to engage with the said perforated plates, and connected at their rear ends with the supporting-levers I, which are provided with means for engaging with the said serrated plates, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
JOSEPH B. WELSH.
HARRY TRUDELL.
