JOSEPH S. FOSTER, OF SALEM, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 104,135; dated June 14, 1870.
mpnovsmnn'r m amass-spams.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
Be it known that I, J osnen S. Fosrnn, of ,Salem, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and improved Spring Arrangement for Carriages, 850.; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those'skilled in the art tomake and use the same, reference being had to accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, of which- Figure 1 is a perspective viewyand Fignrefl-is a top sectional view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to an improved spring arrangement for carriages, 860., so constructed that the carriage will remain nearly level, no matter in what part of-it the load may be placed.
It consists of two circular or elliptic springs; having their corresponding sides so connected that depressing one spring causes a corresponding depression of the other.
The springs A and B are fastened to the axle X, in a line with it at m m, and to the carriagebar at o o.
The bar Dis attached to the spring A at k, and to the spring B at h.
The bar 0 is attached to the spring A at e, and to the spring B at f.
A weight placed over the spring B will cause the sides to spread apart, and they being connected by the rods 0 and D to the sides of the spring A, will cause them to spread in a corresponding manner, which will keep the carriage-bar parallel to the axle.
This arrangement may also be applied to spring seats.
Having thus described my inventon,
What I claim is- The combination of the springs A and B and the rods 0 and D, constructed and arranged substantially as described.
JOSEPH S. FOSTER.
