ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
of August, 1868l i Be it known that we, B. H. Homme and D. C. LAMPMAN, of Troy, in the county of Bradford, and vState of Pennsylvania, have invented a new-and'useful Improvement in Fastening Horse-Collars; andwe do hereby declare the following to be a. full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- 'I Figure l is a front elevation of a horse-collar hzving my improved fastening, and
Figure 2 acentral vertical section through the two lower ends of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in each of the figures.
The nature of our invention consists in securing horse-collars, which are divided at their lower end, by means of a. socket secured to the one side of the collar, receiving a. tubular end piece upon4 the other side, said end piece containing a spring and catch, to enga-ge inthe socket, and thus form a. secure fastening foi-*the collar.
The socket A, and end piece B,-'constituting oui` improved fastening, are each made hollow, of metal, and of tlie same form, the end piece B being made so much smaller in transverse section that it will readily slide Within the socket A.
The inner ends of both the socket and end piece embrace the ends s s of the collar, and may be secured thejleto by stitching, or in any other suitable manner.
To make the connection more firm and secure, we insertwooden blocks, c, within the ends s of the collar, and, having firmly secured the same thereto, by tacks or otherwise, insert the ends of the collar thus stayed by the blocks within the metallic socket and end piece, and fasten them thereto bythe use of screws passing through the metal into the wooden blocks, either from an interior partition-plate within the'socket and end piece, as shown in iig. 2, (in which case the screws are wholly concealed or from the exterior.
Within the end piece, B, we secure a suitable spring, D, either straight, bent, or spiral, to actuate a catch, E, which, projecting from the end piece at any suitable point on its surface, shall engage, when the piece is properly inserted within the socket A, with a slot, or notch, or aperture therein.
A pin, I", projects from the spring, by which it Amay be retracted, and the catch thus released, sc as to undol and release the fastening ofthe collar. l p
We do not claim the mode of connecting the ends s s by means of a socket-joint, nor do we claim a springcatch to obtainv a fastening of theends together; but having fully described our invention,
We claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent n The hollow end piece B, provided with a spring-actuated catch concealed within the same, when secured to one side of the'horsecollar S, and made to t into a socket, A, secured to the other side, the whole constituting an improved fastening for the collar, substantially as herein set forth.
The foregoing specification of ourimprovement in fastening horse-collars signed by us, this eleventh -day 13. H. HOBART.
