Letters Patent No. 94,363, dated August 31, 1869.
IMPROVED SHUTTER-IASTENING.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
'To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, BENJAMlN D. WASHBURN, of the city of Boston, county of Siriiolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful- Improvement in Window-Blind Fastenings; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the saine, reference being had to the drawings accompanying this specitication, and making a part thereof. `Figure l is a perspective view of my fastening.
Figure 2, the spring that operates the hook, or catch; and
Figure 3, a sectional longitudinal view, showing the locality of the different parts. y
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a window blind fastening, in such a manner as that it can easily be applied to any window blind of very simple and cheap construction, and not liable to get out of order.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construcand operation.
The shell or case of this fastening -is made preferably in one piece, -as shown at B. On its external surface screw-threads are cut sorthat upon boring a` hole in the blind, a little less than the diameter ofthe shell or case, it can be screwed into the saine with little or no diliiculty.
At each end of the shell or case are tips or prolongations, x x, on the inner side of which are ont or cast slots, cl d.
The hook X is placed within the shell or case, andl pivotted centrally therein at e.
The spring C is attached in the 'manner shown in the drawing, and keeps the hook A closed or in. contact with the case or shell B.
The points of either end of the hook A as, represented at f f, are retained in the slots dy d, contained in the tips or projections a: x bythis form of construction there can be no lateral displacement of the hook, and when the case or shell is screwed into the. blind, a sufficient purchase is given to it, and seldom requiring anything but the hand to put it in position.
Were it not for the slot above referred to, in screwing the case or shell into the blind, there would be a great liability to bend or break the hook A. By this construct-ion such a result is rendered impossible.
A staple or other suitable device is driven into the walll of the building at such a point thereonthat when the blind is thrown back, it will force open the hook A, and is at once clasped by the saine and held firmly in position. 'llo release the blind, it is only required to raise the hook A at the opposite side, and'close the same. Upon the window-sill a like staple, or suitable device, is attached, to which the blind is fastened and closed.
My invention can also be applied to a case or shell made in two parts, so that the tip or projection can form a part'of the same, and contain the slots herein referred to, and for the purposes described.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In window-blind fastenings, the projections x x, upon either or both ends of the shell, or case,wl1en manner and for the purpose herein described.
2. The combination of the hook A, shell B, tips herein described.
