J. WARREN GUSTER, OF LIMERIUK STATION, ASSIGN OR T0 HIMSELF AND HENRY C. MARGH, OF LAWRENOEVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 86,282, dated Januar/ry 26, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN IBOLTS FOR SHUTTERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the sama.`
To all whom it ma/y concern Be it known that I, J. WARREN OUsTER, of Limerick Station, in the county of Montgomery, and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bolts for Shutters; and d o hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. v
The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement of a shutter-bolt, which is so constructed that the shutters may be secured at any angle desired, or,
as commonly called, bowed; also, the bolt is soenclosed that it cannot, if it should become rusty, stain the shut- In order to enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which form a part of this speciiicatiomand in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pair of shutters with my belt attached Figure 2, an inside view of the bolt-casing; and
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the bolt.
A A represent two shutters, hinged to the casing B.
On one of these shutters is secured a box or casing, G, in which the bolt D is placed.
A part of the lower side of the casing G is slotted, as seen inA iig. 1, and that part of the casing' below said slot, and which part is on the shutter, is provided with a series ofnotches,a c, in which notches a small lug, c, on the lower side of the inner end of the bolt, iits.
The bolt D is provided,at its inner end, with a handleI or knob, E, which projects below the casing C, through the slot mentioned, and on its upper side is a spring, F, which presses the bolt down, so that the lug ewill come into the notches a ct, and lock the bolt.
This spring is placed on a pin on the bolt D, as seen in g. 3.
The outer end of the casing G is provided with a lip, G, which extends over theend of the bolt, and comes flush with the outer edge of the shutter.l
By the arrangement of the casing C'in such manner as above described, it will beseen that the bolt is at all times protectedfiand -cannot get rusty, and thereby stain the shutter. But should it, nevertheless, happen to get rusty, then a projection, H, on the inner side of the belt, keeps it away from the shutter.
On the other shutter is a receiving-chamber, K, open at both ends, and provided, at the outer end, with a lip, I, similar to the one on the casing C.
As an additional lock to the shutter, I provide a pin, J, which is inserted through a hole iu the lip I, and into a hole in the front end of the bolt D, which, for this purpose, is formed with a projection, L, on the end. When the bolt is drawn back, the projection L entersintoa groove made for that purpose on the inner side of the casing.
If it is desired to open the shutters partly only, then place the bolt so that it projects a suitable distance from the casing C, then allow the front end of the bolt t0 enter the chamber K, and place the pin J in the holes provided for it, and the shutters will be held stationary at that point.
The pin J may be either in the shape of a hook, or attached by a cord to the shutter, both of which modes are shown in tig. 1, or may be in any other form desired.
' Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement'of the bolt D, its knob E, lug e,
case C, having notches a, a, in combination with the iianged cap K', and pin J, all constructed and operating substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 17th day of September, 1868.
' J. WARREN OUSTER.
