DOOR AND WINDOW FASTENER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM H. L. vVELLs, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door and Vindow Fasteners, of which the following is a specification. 1
This invention is an improved door and window fastener to secure a door or Window either in closed position or in partly open position, so that a door or window may be partly opened to admit air and afford ventil'ation and be secured in such partly opened position to prevent an intruder from entering therethrough, the object of the invention being to provide an improved fastener of this kind which is cheap and simple in construction, is strong and durable, may be readily operated, and may be readily installed.
The invention consists in the features of construction, combination, and arrangement of devices, hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is an elevation of a fastener constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention and showing the same in use as a door fastener, the door being indicated as in closed and locked position and the keeper being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same showing the door in partly opened position. Fig. 3 is an elevation at right angles to Fig. 1 and with the door also in partly opened position. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail sectional views. Fig. 6 is an elevation of'my improved fastener for use as a window fastener. Fig 7 is a sectional view of the same showing the upper sash in closed and fastened position in full lines and in partially lowered position in dotted lines and also showing the retaining spring in normal position in full lines and in bolt releasing position in dotted lines. Fig. 8 is a detail perspective view of one of the thumb tacks used for covering the heads of the screw which secure the casing and the members of the catch tothe sash and window frame respectively.
In the embodiment of my invention, I provide a casing 1 which may be attached to a door or window and is here shown as comprising a base plate 2 having openings 3 for the reception of securing screws, and a barrel or tubular guide member 4 on the base Specification of Letters latent. plate. This barrel has a transverse slot 5 and also is provided with a pair of slots 6, 7 of unequal length which converge to the slot 5, the slot 6 being shorter than the slot 7. A bolt 8 is longitudinally slidable and is also adapted to turn in the barrel or guide member 4 and has an operating knob 9 which is connected thereto by a stem 10, said stem being adapted to move in either of the slots 5, 6, 7. Near its outer end, the bolt is provided with a circumferential annular groove 11, providing a reduced neck 12 and a head 13.
I also provide a keeper 14 which comprises a pair of members 15, 16. Said members are adapted to be arranged with the member 15 on the outer side of the member 16 and have registering openings 17, for the reception of the screws wherewith to secure said members to one side of the door frame. The members 15, 16 of the keeper are respectively provided with substantially semitubular portions 18, 19, which semi-tubular portions are provided with matching shoulders 20, 21 respectively. The bolt 8 when in locking position, to secure the door closed, enters the tubular socket formed by the members 18, 19, as will be understood and the stem 10 of the bolt may be turned downwardly in the slot 5 to hold the bolt in such locking position. When the bolt 8 is withdrawn to the full extent, so that the stem 10 is in the outer end of the long slot 7, the bolt is entirely disengaged from the keeper and hence the door may be opened.
In order to secure the door in partly opened position, I provide a link bar 22 which has an opening 23 near one end that receives the semi-tubular portion 19 of the keeper member 16, so that said link bar is pivotally mounted on said keeper, the part 18 of the keeper member 15 engaging the outer side of the link bar at the pivotal end of the latter and hence retaining the link bar on the pivotal portion 19. The member 16 is also provided on its outer side, with a rib 241 which is concentric with the pivotal portion 19 and which bears against one side of the link bar and prevents the latter from being bent. The link bar is provided near its free outer end with an opening 25 for the reception of the head 13 and to engage around the neck 12 of the bolt to hold the door in partly open position. WVhen the bolt is in such position, the stem 10 is at the outer end of the shorter slot 6. To
strengthen the link bar, the same is provided on its outer side with a pair of reinforc-Y ing flanges 26.
When my improved fastener is used on a window, a strong retaining spring 27 is provided which ordinarily prevents the bolt from being fully withdrawn from the keeper and which must be disengaged from the inner end of the bolt, before the latter can be fully withdrawn as will be understood.
In order to cover the heads of the screws which secure the casing 1 and the members of the catch to the sash and window frame respectively, I provide thumb tacks 28, the heads 29 of which cover the heads of the screws and the stems and entering points of which are at one end of the heads 29 and may be driven into the wood and inserted through slotted enlargements 31 of the screw openings.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. In a fastener of the class described, a casing having a guide element, a bolt mounted for sliding movement in the guide element, means to secure the bolt in adjusted position in combination With a keeper to receive the bolt, and a link bar pivotally mounted on the keeper, said lever bar and bolt having devices adapting the link bar to be attached to and detached from the bolt, the said keeper having a cylindrical socket portion for the reception of the bolt and the said link bar having a pivotal opening through which said cylindrical socket portion of the keeper extends.
2. In a fastener of the class described, a casing having a guide element, a bolt mounted for sliding movement in the guide element, means to secure the bolt in adjusted position in combination with a keeper to receive the bolt, and a link bar pivotally mounted on the keeper, said lever bar and bolt having devices adapting the link bar to be attached to and detached from the bolt, the said keeper having a cylindrical socket portion for the reception of the bolt and the said link bar having a pivotal opening through which said cylindrical socket por- Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents tion of the keeper extends, said keeper com prising a pair of members detachably se- 5 cured together and the said cylindrical socket member comprising sections with which said keeper members are respectively provided.
3. In a fastener of the class described, a casing having a guide element, a bolt mounted for sliding movement in the guide element, means to secure the bolt in adjusted position in combination with a keeper to receive the bolt, and a link bar pivotally mounted on the keeper, said lever bar and bolt having devices adapting the link bar to be attached to and detached from the bolt, the said keeper having a cylindrical socket portion for the reception of the bolt and the said link bar having a pivotal opening through which said cylindrical socket portion of the keeper extends, said keeper comprising a pair of members detaehably secured together and the said cylindrical socket member comprising sections with which said keeper members are respectively provided, said sectional socket portions being provided with coengaging shoulders.
4. In a fastener of the class described, a casing having a guide element, a bolt mounted for sliding movement in the guide element, means to secure the bolt in adjusted position in combination with a keeper to receive the bolt, and a link bar pivotally mounted on the keeper, said lever bar and bolt having devices adapting the link bar to be attached to and detached from the bolt, the said keeper having a cylindrical socket portion for the reception of the bolt and the said link bar having a pivotal opening through which said cylindrical socket portion of the keeper extends, and the said keeper having a rib to bear against the link bar and prevent the latter from bending.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
