Description

'J. WAGNER.
HASP LOCK. APPLICATION FILED MAY 26, 1913.
Patnted Apr; 21, 1914,,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN WAGNER, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
HASP-LOCK.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN WAGNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hasp-Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to improvements in locks, and has for its object to so construct a device of this character that the same can be easily and quickly applied for use.
A further object of the invent-ion is to provide a lock, which is exceedingly simple in construction, and one which can be used in connection with barn doors, gates, valises or the like.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the lock showing the same applied to a door. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the finger bearing screw. Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view showing a slightly modified form of the invention.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a plate, which is secured to the door in any suitable manner, and has hingedly connected to one end a plate 2. Carried by the plate 2 is a casing 3, the same being preferably rectangular in formation, and is provided with spaced flanges 4:, said flanges being located approximately midway of the casing. One of the sides of the casing is provided with an opening 5, the purpose of which will appear later. Alined with the opening 5, and formed in the opposite side of the casing is a key-way 6, the same being bridged by a bar 7, said bar serving to prevent insertion of a key other than the one designed to operate the lock.
A screw 8 is provided and is engaged in the door frame and has its outer end provided with a head 9 through which is passed a rivet 10, said rivet serving to secure the inner ends of the resilient fingers 11 of the head, said fingers having their outer ends Specification of Letters Patent.

provided with catches 12. To one of the fingers 11 is connected'one end of a leaf spring 13, the other end of which slidably engages the adjacent finger, said spring serving in addition to the resiliency of the fingers to hold the catches in firm engagement with the flanges 4 when the casing 3 has been swung over into engagement with the fingers. The catches 12 are provided with bev eled edges 14 which are engaged by the beveled ends 15 of the wards 16 of the key 17, said wards being spaced apart so that they can pass the bar 7 to engage the catches.
In the modified form of the invention the casing 18 contains flanges 19 which are nonalined within the casing so as to engage the catches 20' carried by the fingers 21 which are of unequal length and are connected to a screw 22 similar to the screw 8 of the preferred form. In this form of the invention a key 23 is employed, the same being provided with wards 24 of unequal length so that they can engage the catches 20 to operate the SELH'B to permit the casing to be swung from engagement with the fingers.
From this construction it will be seen that to lock the door it is only necessary to swing the casing so that the fingers pass through the opening 5 in the casing, after which the beveled edges 14 of the catches will engage the opposing edges of the flanges 4, thus forcing the fingers toward each other so that upon continued pressure upon the casing the flanges will ride over the beveled edges and snap into engagement with the outer surface of the flanges thus locking the device. When it is desired to unlock the device it is only necessary to insert the key in the key-way 6 until the beveled lower ends of the wards 16 engage the similar edges of the catches 12, thereby forcing the fingers toward each other so that the catches will clear the flanges 4.
As the operation of the modified form of the invention is similar to that of the pre ferred form it is not thought necessary to describe the same.
What is claimed is 1. A lock of the class described comprising a hingedly connected casing, spaced flanges mounted in the casing, a screw hav ing resilient fingers secured to its outer end, catches formed upon the outer ends of said fingers and adapted to enter the casing and engage the flanges.
2. A lock of the class described compristhe casing to engage the flanges therein, and means passable through the key-way for forcing the fingers toward each other to permit the casing to be swung from engage ment with the fingers.
In testimony whereof, I aifiX my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN VAGNER.
