Description

w. R. M. ADAMS. COMBINED DOOR BOLT AND CHAIN. N. 177,e74.
Patented May 23,1876.
UNITED STATES PATENT WILLIAM R. M. ADAMS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED DOORBOLTS AND CHAINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,674, dated May 23, 1876 application filed October 6, 1875.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. M. ADAMS, of New York, in the State of New York, have invented a Combined Door Bolt and Chain, of which the following is a specification:
Door-chains havebeen applied to allow the door to be partially opened, but prevent it being entirely opened from the outside. One end has been secured to the jamb and the other end of the chain held in. a slotted keeper on the door, that permitsthe chain to be detached'only when the door is closed.
My invention consists in a novel method of combining a door-bolt and a guard-chain, so that the chain can be used alone, when desired, or the bolt also :used to secure the door,
- when closed; and I also combine with this device a staple upon the bolt, and an eye upon the door, so that a padlock can be used to lock these together, and thereby prevent the bolt being drawn out of its socket until the padlock is removed. x k
In the drawing, Figure 1 is an elevation of my device in a position for use as a bolt. Fig. 2 is the same with the chain in position for use; and Fig. 3 is a plan view.
The plate a is secured to the door by screws, as usual. This plate a. is formed with the barrel b for the bolt 0. dis the socket for the end of the bolt, said socket being fastened upon. the door or jamb, and receives the bolt that secures the door. An eye or staple, 6, upon the bolt 0 serves as a handle to slide the bolt by, and this eye moves in the longitudinal slot 1 in the barrel b, the movement of the bolt being limited by the length of this slot. .The eye 6 can be .turned down into the vertical slots 2 or 3 at the ends of the slot 1, when the bolt is either wholly in the socket d or projected partially therefrom and into the socket d. The chain f is connected at one end' to the eye 6, and at the other end to an eye, It, upon the socket-plate, d.
When the bolt is slid back far enough-t0 allow the eye 0 to be turned down into the slot 2, the bolt is then clear of the socket d, and the door can be opened, but only so far as the chain will allow, and the length of the passed through this slot 4 clear of the barrel I b, and the bolt slid out, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
It is usual to provide door-chains with a J keeper, which is secured upon the door-jamb separate from the socket, and the end of the chain is held in this keeper out of the way, when not in use. I accomplish this object by forming'a vertical tube, i, upon the socket d, and in this tube '6 the bolt is held when not in use, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1.
When the bolt is slipped into the socket d, and the eye 0 is turned down into the slot 3, the door is held by the bolt, and to render the fastening more secure I provide a staple, 70, upon the plate, over which staple the eye 0 is passed, and if a padlock is put upon staple k, the eye a is held fast, and the bolt cannot be moved back. The door-bolt can thus be made to answer for a lock.
I claim as my invention 1. The bolt a, sliding in the barrel 1), but removable therefrom, the socket d, for the end of the bolt, and a chain connected at one end to said socket, and at the other end to the bolt, for the purposes and as set forth.
2. The barrel b, bolt 0, eye 6, and chain f, in combination with the staple k, for a padlock. or other fastening, and the socket 61, substantially as described.
The vertical tube i, made in one piece with socket d, and forming a keeper for the bolt and chain when not in use, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me this 5th day of October, A,
WILLIAM R. M. ADAMS.
