UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES B. HAVES, OF NORTH TARRYTOVN, NE\V YORK.
CHAIN-BOLT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 339,883, dated April 13, 1886.
Application filed February 12, 1886. Serial No. 191,760.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Janus B. HAwEs, of North 'Iarrytown, in the county of \Vestchester, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Chain-Bolts for Doors, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a part of a double door and of a chain-bolt to which my improvement has been applied. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of a part of the same, taken through the line 00 00, Fig. 1.
The object of this invention is to provide chain-bolts for doors, constructed in such a manner that they can be used for fastening the doors to which they may be applied when fully closed.
The invention consists in the combination with the chain and its support and the sliding bolt and its keeper. of a chain and hook, as will be hereinafter fully described.
A represents a door or a part of a double door, and 13 represents the other part of a double door or a door-casing.
G is the ordinary chain, one end of which is attached to the sliding bolt D and its other end is attached to a support, E, secured to the other part, B, of the door or to the doorcasing. The bolt D slides in the slot in the keeper F, attached to the door A. The farther or rear end of the slot in the keeper F is widened, as shown in Fig. 1, so that the bolt D, when at that end of the said keeper, can be readily put in and taken out.
To the support E, or to a link at or near the end of the chain 0, is attached one end of ashort chain, G, to the other end of which is attached a hook, H, or other equivalent fastening. The hook H can be a snap-hook or an ordinary hook, and the chain G is made of such a length that when the door is fully closed and the hook H is hooked into the eye of the bolt D, or the first link of the chain 0, or secured by other equivalent device, the said chain G will be so taut as to prevent the door from being opened.
W'it-h this construction, when the bolt D is in the slot of the keeper F and the hook H disconnected, the door can be partly opened to allow a person within the house to see and converse with a person at the outside of the door, but will prevent the said door from being opened so far as to allow any one to pass through the doorway. The hook H being fastened in the eye of the bolt D, or into a link of the chain 0, the said bolt D will be fastened in the inner end of the slot in the keeper F, and will thus secure the door closed, holding in its fixed position the bolt D, and preventing the said bolt from moving from its said fixed position.
\Vhen the bolt D is not in use, it can be in serted in a slotted keeper, I, attached to the door or casing D in the rear of the support E.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with a sliding bolt and its chain applied to a door and its casing or a double door, of the supplementary chain with one end connected to the aforesaid chain or its support, and the other end detachably connected to said bolt or its chain, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the chain 0 and its support E, and the sliding bolt D and its keeper F, of the chain G and hook H, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby a chain-bolt can be made to fasten a door fully closed, as set forth.
JAMES B. HAXVES.
