DOOR-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 16,1912.
Application filed March 20, 1911. Serial No. 615,519.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOMER J nr'rl, residing at Roxton Pond, in the Provlnce of Quebec and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My improved door fastener is intended more particularly to be applied to screen doors, and it has for its object to provlde-a cheap and simple fastening device whereby the door, when swung shut, will be automatically fastened, and which while normally" permitting ready opening of the door from the outside will be easily adjustable to lock the door against such opening.
For full comprehension of my invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and the appended claims, and to the accompanying drawings in which;
Figure 1 is an inside. face view of a portion of a screen door with its door frame, showing the invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on line 22 Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on line 33 Fig. 1, indicating the hinge side of the door and the adjacent portion of the door frame.
In the drawings I have shown at 1, a portion of a free side of a screen door of usual construction, a portion of the door frame being indicated at 3, and the door hinge at 1 in Fig. 3.
My improved door fastener comprises a resilient locking member in the form of a spring hasp 4 preferably made of resilient sheet metal and having one end bent to form a foot 5 whereby it may be secured as by the screws 6 to the door 1 upon the inside thereof, or side facing the room or apartment to which the door leads. This hasp l is formed to present a slot 7 near its opposite end in which slot engages a keeper 8 upon the door frame, this end of the hasp being curved as shown at 9 to permit the hasp to ride over the keeper when the door is closing. In order to enable the door to be readily opened from the outside, I provide a lever 12 having one end curved and attached to the hasp at a point adjacent the inner end of the slot 7, the opposite end of the lever extending through an opening 13 in the door to the outside thereof and being provided with aknob 1 1 for operating it, the opening 13 preferably tapering laterally from the outer to the inner edge of the door so as to permit of'movement of the lever while the constricted inner end of the opening provides a fulcrum point for the lever, the lever passing through an opening in the foot 5 corresponding and registering with the inner end of the opening 13. A scutcheon plate 15 having an opening corresponding and registering with the outer end of the opening 13, may be placed upon the outer face of the door. To release the hasp from the keeper and so permit the door being opened the lever 12 is operated to move the hasp to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3 allowing the door to swing away from the door frame in the direction indi+ cated by the arrow. To open the door from the inside the curved end 9 of the hasp may be grasped and the hasp moved to the dotted position.
In order that the door may be readily locked from the inside against being opened from the outside I prefer to form the keeper/ 8 in a manner to permit of its being adjusted to lock the hasp against disengagement therefrom. To this end I provide the keeper with a hook 20 normally turned inwardly in line with the slot 7 but adapted, when it is desired to lock the door, to be swung over the body of the hasp to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3 in which position the hook locks the hasp from disengagement with the keeper, the latter being conveniently swiveled in the door frame to permit of this movement by threading the shank thereof and screwing it into the frame, the keeper being conveniently made from a piece of wire or rod bent as desired. It will be noted that my improved fastener also acts as a cushion between the door and frame when the door is closing by reason of the curved end of the hasp engaging the keeper, while it also keeps the door positively closed even should the usual door spring (not shown) with which these doors are equipped become weakened.
I claim a 1. A door fastener comprising a hasp fixed to the inside of the door, a lever fulcrumed between its ends to the door and projecting on opposite sides thereof and being connected at one end to the said hasp and having its other end adapted to serve as an operating handle, a keeper upon the door frame adapted to be engaged by the said hasp, such keeper having an integral hook adapted to be moved into or out of'position locking the hasp against disengagement from the keeper,

A door fastener comprising a'spring hasp having one end bent to form a foot adapted to be attached to the door the opposite end being curved, the hasp being formed to present a slot near the last mentioned end, a lever fulcrulned between its ends to the door and projecting on opposite sides thereof and having one end curved and connected to the said hasp and the opposite end adapted to serve as an operating handle, a keeper sWiveled upon the door frame and adapted to be engaged by the said hasp and project into the slot therein, such keeper having an integral hook adapted to assume either a position in line with the said slot or projecting over the hasp, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
3. A doorfastener comprising a locking member secured upon the inside of the door, a device secured to the locking member and extending through the door, and a keeper iswiveled upon the door frame and adapted to be engaged by the said locking member to prevent opening of the door, such keeper being adapted to be moved into or out of position retaining the said locking member against disengagement therefrom.
