Description

(No Model.) I
P PARWELL.
DOOR FASTENER- No. 473,648. Patented Apr. 26, 1892.
- cm W UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PULASKI FARVVELL, OF FREDERICK, ILLINOIS.
DOOR-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 473,548, dated April 26, 1892. Application filed July 9, 1891- Serial No. 398,911. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PULASKI FARWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Frederick, in the county of Schuyler, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in door-fasteners; and it has for its objects, among others, to provide a simple, cheap, durable, and efficient automatic door fastener and handle which requires but one hand to' operate and which may also be used for the attachment of a padlock, seal,or other additional security. It is designed more particularly for car-doors; but of course the invention is not limited to such use. I provide a combined fastener and handle preferably of a single piece of material and so ar ranged as to actuate by gravity as the same is moved from the one position to the other.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form apart of this specification, and in which Figure l is a front view of a portion of a car with my improvement applied and locked by means of a'padlock. Fig. 2 is a perspective view, on an enlarged scale, with the door unfastened.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in both of the views where they occur.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a portion of a car, and B the door of known construction.
Upon the outer face of the door I afiix two or more staples or guides at, through which the fastener is designed to be moved and by which it is held from displacement, yet allowed to partially rotate, as will hereinafter appear.
0 is the automatic combined fastener and handle. It is preferably formed of a single piece of wire of sufficient size to give the required strength. Near its center itis bent upon itself to form the elongated loop 0, ex-
tending at right angles to the length of the main body and which serves as a handle by which the fastener may be operated. The portions 0' parallel with the door'are guided in the guides a, and one end is turned at right angles to the said portions and at right angles to the handle, as seen best in Fig. 2, and serves as a stop to limit the movement of the said portions in the guides and prevents its being displaced therefrom. This bent portion ct may be omitted or other construction provided without departing from the spirit of the invention. The other end is formed into an eye bend'or loop 6, which extends in the same plane as the bent portion (1. On the door-jamb D is a staple or analogous'provision E, through which the loop of the fastener is designed to pass when it is designed .to lock the door.
The operation is simple and apparent.
NVith the parts in the position shown in Fig.
2 the door is unfastened. When it is desired to fasten the door, all that it is necessary to do is to push the fastener to the left until the loop 6 passes through the staple E on the jamb, when the parts may be caused to assume the position in which they are shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, either by gravity or by pressure downward upon the handle. The loop 6 may serve as a means for locking the door by a padlock or seal, as seen in Fig. 1.
Modifications in detail may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the il1-' veution or sacrificing any of its advantages. For instance, the right-hand end of the rod may be extended across the door, so as to look upon the other end also-as, for instance, by having the end bent so as to engage a slot in the side of the door-frame, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1.
What I claim as new is A door-fastener consisting of a piece of metal having horizontal portions, a handle extending at right angles thereto near its center and at one end a loop bend or eye independent of said handle and at right angles to the main portion and to the said handle, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I at'fix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PULASKI FARVVELL.
