Description

W. WAT- A TORNEY W 0 J5 z ,3
m aid; I
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
WILLIAM WATSON, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN DOOR-CHECKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 205,931, dated July 9, 1578; application filed June 1, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM WATSON, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Noiseless Door-Pad and Hold- Back; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construct-ion and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a side view of my improved door-pad and hold-back, and Fig. 2 is an end view of the same applied.
This invention has relation to improvements in door-fastenings for use in residences, railroad-cars, houses, and vessels.
The object of the invention is to devise a fastening which will be noiseless in operation and yet perfectly effective.
The nature of the invention consists in the construction and novel arrangement, in connection with a door-fastener, of a roller formed of elastic material, supported in the path of the door and an angular catch secured upon the door, and adapted to strike, compress, and ride over said roller when the door is open, as will be more fully hereinafter shown and described.
In the annexed drawings, the letter A designates an ordinary door, and B its casing. 0 indicates a roller arranged in bearings b upon the door-frame, and D a bracket-catch secured to the door and designed to engage the roller aforesaid. This catch, as well as the bearing-plate c, is made of metal of any suitable description and is of angular form, the two Wings being at an obtuse angle to each other, one of the wings having perforations made in it for the passage of suitable fastening devices, as screws or nails. When in position the other wing, 6?, forms an angular recess, 0, with the door, and its extreme end is below the highest point of the roller, so that when the door is closed the point of the wing d comesin contact with the roller, causes it to turn in its bearings, and, in order to pass it, causes the same to be compressed. After passing, the roller springs into the recess 0 aforesaid and holds the door against any ordinary strain perfectly closed; but if a sharp pull be given to it the roller is again compressed and the catch passes off from it, thus permitting the said door to be reopened. Instead of the catch being on the door and the roller on the door-frame, their positions may be changed, that of one for the other, and the same results will obtain.
It will be observed that the roller, being of a yielding material, as rubber, does not rack or loosen the hinges, and that the binding of the catch thereon is due to the springing of the roller after compression into the recess 0 aforesaid. This device is also designed to be used to prevent the door, after being opened, from slamming to, and the roller may be on the door and the catch on the wall of the room, or the reverse.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a door-fastener, the combination of a roller, 0, formed of elastic material, supported in the path of the door, and an angular catch, D, secured upon the door and adapted to strike, compress, and ride over said roller ghdenthe door is opened, substantially as speci- In testimony that 1 claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
