SAMUEL WALLACE, OF \VASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO HELEN F. SOULE, OF SAME PLACE.
DOOR-CHECK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 373,543, dated November 22, 1887.
Application filed September 5, 1887. Serial No. 248.848.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL WALLAcE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vashington, in the District of Oolumbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Fasteners and Catches; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has relation to improvements I5 in door fasteners and catches; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
The object of my invention is to provide an effective, simple, cheap, and durable means for either securing a door when in an open position or for securely fastening the door when closed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device in operation. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3-is a detail view of the rod or bar.
Referring to the drawings, the letter A represents the plate of my improved door fastening or catch made in any suitable form, and having perforations or openings at its upper and lower ends, by means of which the said plate is secured to the face of a door at either side and below the look by means of 5 screws or other fastening means. The plate is also provided with a longitudinal slot, B, extending vertically in the center of the face thereof.
The letter D represents a flat metal spring,
which is seated in the slot of the plate with its lower end secured in an opening, (1, near the bottom of the plate, by any suitable means-as, for instance, bending the, end of the spring against the back of the plate, as
shown in the drawings. The plate is further provided with hearings or trunnions a.
The letter C denotes a rod or bar having at its upper portion arms (1 d", which are journaled or pivoted in the bearings a of said plate, and are adapted to revolve therein for the purpose of operating and adjusting the (No model.)
rod for keeping a door open or securely look ing the same. The extreme upper end of the rod is provided with a projection, e, which bears against the loosely-mounted upper end of the spring to keep the same in position in the slot of the plate. The lower end of the rod or bar, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, has a sharpened end, which permits the door of a stable or other doors to be held open by means of the sharpened end being connected to the earth or other convenient place.
As shown in Fig. 3, the bar has at its lower end a series of teeth or pointed ends. This construction of bar is designed for securing the door from the inside of a building when the device is applied to the facing of adoor which opens inward from the outside of a building, whereby a safe and reliable fastening is had for the doors of stores or other buildings.
When the device is not in operation, the rod or bar is thrown upward and held in a vertical position by means of the spring D.
I am aware of Patent No. 147,227, in which 73 is shown a roller-journaled in the forked end of a lever pivoted in a bracket attached to the door, the endof the lever opposite the roller being cam-shaped and pressing against a spring, the whole being so arranged that So the roller may be turned down so as to run upon the floor and serve as a brake, or may be turned up out of contact with said floor, and I do not claim such a device, broadly.
Having described my invention, what I claim is The combination, with the plate having a slot inits face portion and bearings inits upper end and a spring seated in said slot with its lower end connected in an opening of the said 0 plate, of the rod or bar having arms and a projection at its upper end, said arms engaging the bearings of the plate, said projection having its bearing against the spring, said rod or bar also having a pointed end, sub- 5 stantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I at'fix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL \VALLAGE.
