Description

G. F. EHEMANN.
COMBINED SASH AND DOOR UHEOK.
Patented Dec. 14, 1909.
UNITED STATES PATENT @FFIQE.
GEORGE F. EHEMANN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COMBINED SASH AND DOOR CHECK.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. EHEMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Sash and Door Check, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combination door and sash-lock; and has for its object to provide a device of this character that is simple in construction, easy of manipulation and may be put on and taken ofi with facility.
Figure 1 is an elevation showing the device attached to a door. Fig. 2 is an elevation showing the same attached to a window sash. Fig. 3 is a plan. Fig. a is a view of the vertical part. Fig. 5 is a view in perspective, showing the locking member detached. Fig. (3 is a. detail of construction. Fig. 7 is a modification.
The device consists of two parts, an anglebracket A and a locking arm B. The bracket consists of the horizontal plate 8 and the vertical plate 9, comprising an integral structure, as best shown in Figs. 5 and 7. In practical use, the plate 8 passes under the bottom of the door, the plate 9, extending upward against the inner side, as shown in Fig. 1. The bracket is temporarily secured in place by a pointed pin 10, fixed in the bottom plate 8 and which will be of such a length as to readily permit of the plate being slipped in under the door and the pin forced up into the same. When the device is to be more securely or permanently attached, the plate 9 may be provided with a number of apertures 11 for the insertion of fastening screws.
The plate 9 is provided on the upper end with a tubular hinge-roll 12, and a slot 13 extending downward therefrom and vanishing in a hole let. The hinge-roll is divided in the center, the adjacent ends being beveled as at 15, to provide bearing points 16.
The movable locking-arm B will be bent so as to assume the proper bracing angle when in its engaged position. This arm has a cross-bar 17 formed 011 the upper end thereof which is adapted to have a loose engagement with the hinge-roll 12 and provide for the hinge movement of the arm Specification of Letters Patent.

when it is made to assume either of its two positions. IVhen the arm B is raised or lowered, it passes the points 16, which bear against the surface of the arm close to its junction with the cross-bar and has the effect of spreading the edges of the slot 13, which return to their normal position after the arm passes the center and drops into the free space on either side and is retained against accidental displacement.
A foot 18, is threaded on the lower end of the arm B and is adapted to be adjusted endwise in lengthening or shortening the arm, bringing the foot to a proper bearing on the floor. This foot will ordinarily be composed of rubber or other suitable material that will not mar or scratch the surface it comes in contact with.
Fig. 1 is a modification in that it shows a bifurcated locking-arm 19 having clawends 20 which are adapted to be embedded in the floor when the device is used temporarily, as a lock when the door is closed. The device will hold a door open at any point between a closed and wide open position, and when the door is closed, it provides an additional lock. The device is easily manipulated with the thumb and finger and when not required for use may be conveniently thrown up against the door, out of the way and leaving the door free.
Fig. 2 shows the application of the de vice to a window. In this case the plate 9 is inserted between the meeting sash rails and fastened to the inner sash-rail 21. The foot 18, when in its engaged position, bears against the side rail 22 of the upper sash. This will permit of either sash being opened and locked at any desired point or both at the same time.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a T-shaped shank, of a floor engaging head carried thereby, and a hinge member carried by the door and in which said T-shaped shank is pivotally mounted, said hinge member comprising a vertical slotted body portion, roll portions formed upon said body portion, and cam members formed upon said roll portions which engage said shank and hold said shank at either of its limits of movement.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a floor engaging inember, of a hinge member with which said floor engaging member is pivotally engaged said hinge member comprising a vertical slotted body portion and a rolled portion, said rolled portion having cam surfaces formed thereon which engage the floor engaging member to hold the same at either of its limits of movement.
I11 testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
