FASTENER FOR TH MEETING-RAILS OF S-ASHES.

` to be applied to the meeting-rails of the sashes.
Its object' is to provide a cheap, simple, easily-operated, andv efficient locking device and it consists inV the matters hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a fastening constructed as proposed by my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view ot' the same. A and B are portions ofthe upper andlower sash, respectively, of a window as ordinarily constructed, and A and B the meeting-railsv of the two sashes.
'G is a bent lever, which is pivoted upon the upper or horizontal surface of the meetingrail B ofthe lowersash by means of a stud or screw, c. The lever C consists of two arms, C and G2, which are preferably placedat right angles to each other, and intersect at or near the pivotal point of said lever'. Upon the extremity of the arm C', which is arranged lon gitudinally in reference to the rail B', is a knob or handle, c', by which said arm may be grasped in operating the lever. The arm C terminates at or near the face of the vertical side piece, A2, of 'the' upper sash, and has an upturned end, c2, constructed to engage a screw-stud, D, on the said sash inthe manner hereinafter described. The lever C is prefera- 'bly constructed of spring sheet metal, and is supported a short distance above the upper surface of the rail B' by means of a plate, E, through one end ot' which the pivot-screwc passes, and which will be hereinafter more fully described. The end of the arm C'Z projects beyond the plate E, so that it is unsupported from beneath, and is capable of slight vertical movement on account ofthe exibility4 of the sheet metal of which the lever C is composed, and said arm has an upturned end, c2, which is provided with an incline, c3, and a semicircular notch, c4, constructed to engage the stud D. The end c2 and the notch c4 therein are shown more plainlyin Fig. 3,which is a sectional view of said end. rlhe notch c4 is brought into engagement with the stud I) by a lateral movement of the end of the arm C, given toit by moving. the end of the arm C'. In this operation the end of the arm C is forced downwardly by the contact of the incline c3 with the stud until the. said stud has passed over the incline and into the said notch.- By' making' the arm C2 iiexible, as described, and forming the incline c3 onthe upturned end thereof, a slight variation in the relative positions of the upper and lower sashes 'will not aiect the, operation of the de- 4 vice; but the yielding of the said arm downward will allow it to engage the stud, notwithstanding such variation. The said springarm G2 also tends to force the upper andlower sash in opposite directions by its upward pressure on the stud when the device is locked, and thus tends to keep the window tightly closed. The downward movement of the arm C2 is limited by the upper surface of the rail B beneath it, so that if an attempt is made to raise the sash said spring will yield slightly until it strikes said rail, and a positive lock will then be formed bythe contact of said arm therewith. The end of the lever C2 is disengaged from the stud D by drawing the end ot the arm C outward, the notch c4 becoming disengaged by the. yielding of the end of the arm C2, as before described.
The stud D is preferably provided with an enlarged head, d, and the upturned end c2 ot' the arm C2 is inclined, as shown in Fig. 2, so that the head el willcome in contact with the inclined face of the upturned end, in the oper- IOO ation ot'locking, and draw the meeting-rails A and B' together for the purpose of making a tightjoint between said meeting-rails.
One of the locking devices described is preferably placed on each side of the window, so that when it is locked the meeting-rails will be drawn together equally at both ends aud a tightjoint made between them throughout their entire length. The plate E, upon which the lever G is mounted, extends from'the pivotal point of said leverlongitudinally beneath and to the end of the arm C', and has a curved projection, E', corresponding with the circular path of the end ot' said arm. Upon the under side ot' the arm C is a short downwardly-proiecting pin, c", preferably placed beheath the knob c', and in the plate E, at the two extremities of the movement of said arm, are formed depressions c c, adapted to receive said pin for the purpose oflocking the'arm C at either limit ot' its movement. Thepin @is of' such length that it remains normally in the depression c', but may be removed therefrom by raising the end of the arm C', which is sufficiently flexible for this purpose.
The end of the arm C is, by the device described, prevented from beingmoved accidentally when the fastening` is unlocked, and additionalsecurity is given to the fastening thereby when locked, the lever G being held in position both by the pin c5 in the depression c and by the engagement ot the notch c4 withthe stud D.
' ln Figs. l and 2 the stud D is shown as projecting from the face ot' the vert-ical side piece or rail, A2, ofthe upper sash, and in order to allow said stud to pass the projecting edge ot the meeting-rail B when the sashes are moved a notch, b2, is made in the said edge, beneath the said stud, as shown in the igures inen- 40; tioned.
ln Figs. 4, 5, 6, and T are shown a modiii Y cation ot' the device described, in which the stud D is placed in a recess in thepiece A2, so that the head of the' said stud is flush with the face of the said piece, and the notch b2 in the rail B2 is rendered unnecessary. I have prefably made the stud D iu the form of a projecn tion or lug upon aplate, F, which is placed in a recess formed in the corner of the piece A2, and secured therein by screws, or in any other desired manner. Such plate and the projection D thereon are shown more plainly in Figs. G and 7. A projecting rim, d', corresponding with the head d ot'the stud D, as shown in the figures lastmentioned, is provided for the purpose of acting, in connection with the inclined end of the arm C2, to draw the lower portions of the sashes together. Vhen the stud D is placed in a recess, as above described, the end of the lever C2 is arranged to project beyond the inner edge of the rail B when the device is locked, in order 'to enter said recess, as shown in Fig. v5, and said lever C2 is given sufficient movement so that when disengaged from the stud D its ends will not project beyond the rea-r edge of the raill B', as shown by dotted lines, which indicate the changed position ofthe lever C in Asaid ligure. It is not essential that the lever C should be bent as shown, but it may be straight, the plate E in such case be ing placed in the same position relative to the arm C, as has been before described in connection with the bent lever shown.
In Fig. S is shown a modified form ot' the plate F and stud D, in whichthe said plate is secured to the upper sash by a screw, (indicated in the figure mentioned by d,) which is provided with a thimble, d2, between its head and the plate F, in order to hold said plate in position. Instead of using the thimble d2 upon the screw d', as shown,the screw may have an enlarged portion adjacent to its head, which will form a shoulder to press upon the plate F and retain it in position on the sash.
The stud D, instead ot' being attached to the vertical side piece of the upper sash, as shown, may be placed upon or form part of a standard or bracket attached to the top of the meeting-rail A ot' said sash, and in such case said standard or bracket, with the stud thereon, and the pivoted lever C can be placed at the center ofthe meeting-rails, thus forming a single central fastening, which can be used instead ot' a locking device at eachside ofthe window.
One or more additional studs, D', as shown in Fig. l, may be placed upon the upper sash,
each of which is arranged to engage the lever" C in the manner before described, so that the sashes may be locked together in any one of the several positions. Then constructed to lool: in several positions the/stud D is preferably placed in a recess in the upper sash, and the plate F, which has been described as being used in connection with said stud, is provided with a lower flange, F2, as shown in Fig. S, which acts against the lower side of the end ofthe arm G2, and, in connection with the stud, prevents any movement of the upper sash in either direction when theyrare locked together in the manner described.
The notch c4 in the end of the spring-arm O2 is not essential to the operation of the device described, and the upturned end of said arm may be provided with a simple incline, which will rest againstthe under side of the stud D when the device is locked, the said arm in such case being held in position by the engagement of thevpin c5 on the arm C with the depression c in the plate E. When the notch is omitted the inclined edge of the upturned end ot' the arm C2 will act, in conjunction with the flexibility of said arm, both to allow for variationin the position ofthe stud'in closing the window and to press the sashes in opposite directions, so as to tend to close them tightly, as before described.

2. In a window-sash fastening, the combination of a headed or flanged stud affixed to a vertical rail of the upper sash and a springlever pivoted to the upper face of the lower sash, and provided with an upturned ange at its free end for engagement with vthe stud, said ange being in a vertical plane inclined to the radius drawn through the saine from the center of the pivotal movement of the lever, and also inclined on its upper surface, suhstantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
3. Ina sash-fastening of the character described, the combination, with the iian ged stud atlixcd tothe upper sash, of the pivoted springlever provided with an upturncd and inclined flange at its end for engagement with the stud, said liange being beveled and notched on its upper surface, substantially as described.
4. In a sash-fastener ot' the character described, the combination, with the springlever C, pivoted between its ends, constructed to en` 2 5 gage the stud on the upper sash by one of its arms, as set forth, and provided with a pin, c5, on the opposite arm, of a plate, E, supporting the lever at its pivotal point, whereby the studengaging arm may be depressed, and provided with one or more notches or depressions, ef, to admit the end ofthe pin c',- substantially as described.
5. In' a fastening device for windows, the combination, with an upper and a lower sash, of a recessed plate, F, upon the upper Asasli and a pivoted spring-lever secured to the lower l sash, and constructed and arranged toengage in said. recess, substantially as and for thepurposes set forth. 4o
