WINDOW-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 13, 1908.
' Application filed. October 8, 1907. Serial No. 396,486.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUY O'ris KELLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buena Vista, in the county of Bockbridge, State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVindow-Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relatesto new and useful improvements in window fastenings and it has more particular reference to a fastener of that type in which a pivoted spring pressed member is carried by one of the sashes for cooperation with a keeper carried by the opposin sash, the object being to provide a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts.
The details of construction will appear in the course of the following description in which reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification like characters designating similar parts throughout the several views, wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of the fastening device showing its application to upper and lower window sashes. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan View of the pivoted latch member, its mount and its actuating spring, and the keeper therefor. Fig. 3 is a detailed perspective of the pivoted member. Fig. 4 is a detailed perspective view of the keeper. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the locking device as an entirety.
In the accompanying drawings, the numeral 5 designates the upper sash and the numeral 6 the lower sash. Secured to the latter is a member 7 having a raised lateral projection 8 which overhangs and is secured, by means of a pivot pin 9 toa latch member 10, disposed transversely of the sash 6. The member 10 has one end formed as a finger piece 11 and its other end provided with an upstanding lug 12 formed with a beveled under face 14. The provision of the raised projection 8 affords a substantial shoulder 15 at the adjacent end of the member 7 which the member 10 impinges as a stop in its normal position under the pressure of a spring 16 disposed in a recess 17 formed in the under face of the member 7. Adjacent the shoulder 15 the member 7 has its face dis posed at an incline as at 18 to permit of the limited movement of the member 10 as will be later explained.
Mounted upon the sash 5 is a keeper 19 having a raised boss 20, from which projects axially and forwardly 2. lug 21 which overhangs the sash 5 and has a downwardly beveled upper face 23.
In use, assuming that the sash 6 is being lowered from a raised position, the beveled under face 14 of the member 10 will engage the face 23 of the keeper 19. The faces ltand 23 coact as cams to move the member 10 on its pivot 9 against the tension of the spring 16, until the lug 12 of said member 10 clears the lug 21 at which time the spring 16 will act to snap the member 10 until it engages the shoulder 15 at which time, the lug 12 will be engaged rearwardly of the lug 21, the latter engaging above the body of the member 10 and thus serving as a positive stop to prevent movement of either of the sashes 5 or 6, until the member 10 has been manually moved to disengage its lug 12 from the lug 21.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that simple and eflicient means are provided for accomplishing the objects of the invention and while the elements herein shown and described are well adapted to serve the functions set forth, it is obvious that various minor changes may be made in the proportions, shape and arrangement of the several parts, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
What is claimed is A fastening device of the class described, comprising in combination with the meeting rails of sash members, of a member having a raised lateral projection and mounted upon one of the rails, a latch pivotally connected to the lateral projection and having an up its lug in engagement with the lug on the standing lug at one end, said member having keeper. 10 a beveled recessed side to allow free move- In testimony whereof, I allix my signature ment of the pivotal latch, a keeper mounted in presence of two Witnesses.
0n the remaining rail and having a boss on GUY OT 1S IUCLLElI.
its upper face and terminating laterally in lVitnesses:
a lug and a spring seated in said recess and T. PAX'roN,
acting directly on the latch to normally hold T. H. KELLER.
