FASTENERS FOR THE MEETING-RAILS 0F SASHES.
No.171 ,694. Patented Jan. 4,1876.
N-PETERS, FHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER WASHINGTON. D C,
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
JOSEPH R. PAYSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEIME'NTIN FASTENERS FOR THE MEETING-RAILS 0F SASHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [71,694, dated January 4, 1876; application filed December 4, 1875.
CASE B.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH R. PAYSON, of Chicago, in the county of (look and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Window-Sash Look, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a top view of my improved sashlock, shown as attached to the sash and unfastened. Fig. 2 is the same view as Fig. 1, but showing the lock fastened. Fig. 3 is a side view of the same, the meeting-rails being shown in section through the line w at, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved sash-lock to be attached to the meeting-rails of the sash, which shall be simple plate and its flange; in the locking arm and hook, in combination with the plate and its flange, and with the plate and its pin; and in a sash-look in which the locking-arm is pivoted at or nearly at an angle of forty-five degrees with the length of the meeting-rails of the sash, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents the meeting or top rail of the lower sash, and B represents the meeting or bottom rail of the upper sash. O is a plate, secured to the rail B, and which is provided with an upwardly-projecting flange or lug, (3, formed at an angle of about'forty-five degrees with the length of the forward edge of said plate, and having a hole formed transversely through its middle part to receive the pivoted ward side, when in the position shown in Fig.
1, made straight, so as to be close to and parallel with the forward edge of the plate 0 and rail B. The outer end of the arm D has a hook, d formed upon it, and is provided with a thumb-piece, d for convenience in operating it.
By this construction, when the arm D is turned upon its pivot through one-half of a revolution, its outer part will rest upon and be at right angles with the meeting-rail A of the lower sash.
Upon the part of the arm D that bears upon the edge of the rail A is formed a lip, d", so that the bearing or point of contact may be close to said edge. To the upper side of the rail A, directly opposite the plate 0, is attached a plate, E, for the arm D to rest upon, to prevent the sash rail from being worn. Upon the outer part of the plate E is formed an upwardly-projecting pin, 6, the forward side of the upper part of which is beveled oif, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3.
When the arm D is turned down upon the rail A the hook d passes over the pin 6, and the bevel of said pin draws the rails A B together, so that it will be impossible to insert any instrument between the sash-rails to tamper with the fastening. The pin 0 and hook d also assist the arm D in resisting any attempt to open the sashes. When the arm D is turned down into the position shown in Fig. 2 any attempt to lower the upper sash or raise the lower sash will press against'the arm D below its axis, and at such an angle with said axis as will tend to turn the arm D downward, causing it to hold more firmly. The same effect would be produced by any instrument inserted between the rails A B.
By taking hold of the thumb-piece d the arm D may be easily turned to lock and unlock the sashes.
With this look the operation of turning the arm D in fastening the window will draw the lower sash up or the upper sash down, should they not be fully closed, without its being necessary to fully close said sashes with the hand before operating the lock.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1 The locking-arm D, in combination with thelplate O, and lug on flange a, substantially l as herein shown and described.
2. The locking-arm D and hook 11 in combination with theplate O and its flange c, and
with the plate E and its pin e, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. A sash-lock in which the locking-arm is JOSEPH R. PAYSON.
described.
