Fig.1.
GEORGE W. BISHOP, OF SARATOGA SPRINGS, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO L. E. WHITING, OF SAME PLACE.
. IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,431, dated September 2, 1873 application filed 1 April 12. 1873.
CASE 0.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEO.W.BIsHOP, of Saratoga Springs, in the county. of Saratoga and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Sash-Locks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference be ing had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a face view of a window-sash with my sashfastener applied. Fig. 2 is a sectional view ofa window-sash, showing a side view of the sash-fastener applied. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of my improved sash-fastener.
This invention has relation to certain improvements in window-sash locks; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the spring locking-dog, its pivoted latch notched on each side, and the slotted catch-plate, all hereinafter more fully described. The object of this invention is mainly to provide a sash-lock with simple and con-' venient operating devices, which will hold it securely Whether the dog be locked in its seat or disengaged.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the window-frame, and B the sashstrip, in contact with which the sash plays. D represents the dog, which is seated in a recess, a, so that its face will be flush with the edge of the recess when the toe d of the dog is projecting. The dog is hinged at its end to the plate E, which is let into and screwed to the frame at the lower end of the recess. This plate is provided with a fiat hook, e, .which extends over the hinge-bar c of the dog D. In this manner the twopieces are arranged to be cast solid, a hinge-pin is dispensed with, and the parts are more easily put together. F designates a curved arm flat from side to side,. and pivoted to the side of the toe of the dog D. This arm is curved upward and forward,
' extending through a slot in the catch-plate G,
which is let into and screwed to the face of the sash-strip B, which is laterally recessed at b to receive the arm. In the under edge of the arm a notch, u, is made, a notch, r, being also made in its upper edge near the head or thumb-piece 2. An angular recess, 1", is made in the plate G at the lower end of the slot 5, into which the upper edge of the notch u is designed to fall when the dog is in its outward or locked position, thus preventing the dog from being pushed back.
In unlocking the window the curved arm is raised until the notch a is clear of the edge of the slot .9, and is pushed in through the slot until the notch 4) takes under the upper edge of the slot 5. This engagement takes place with a sort of snap, for the plane of the head or thumb-piece z is perpendicular to a line passing from its lower edge through the pivot of the arm F; hence the tendency of any pressure on this head is to push it upward as well as backward or inward. 1
Under the dog is seated a spring, to, which exerts an outward pressure upon it, tending to keep it locked. A stud, h, formed on the under side of the dog, serves to keep it in place.
What I claim. as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The sashlock consisting of the hinged dog D, the slotted catch-plate G, and the curved double latch F pivoted to the dog, and pass ing through the slot of the catch-plate, sub stantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
GEO. W. BISHOP.
Witnesses:
PHIL. 0. MAST, GEORGE E. UPHAM.
