Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ERER c. RYAM, OE ROOHEsTER, NEW YORK.
sAsH-LOCK;
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 226,487, dated April 13, 1880.
Application ined october 6,1879.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EBER G. BYAM, of the city of Rochester, county of Monroe, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Sash-Locks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is an elevation, partly in section, showing a fragment of a window and casing with my improvement applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a partial horizontal section. Fig.3 is a perspective view of the sash-lock.
My invention consists of a sash-lock composed of a horizontally-sliding bolt, a holdingplate or keeper of peculiar form, and a swinging dog, all combined and arranged to operate as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the drawings, A is the upper, and B the lower, sash, and C is the casing or jamb, arranged in the usual manner.
The lock or fastening is as follows: D is a plate or keeper, which is secured on top of the lower sash near the jamb. It is preferably secured by a single screw, a, and has two harp-pointed spurs, I) I), on the under side, which strike into the wood and assist in holding it in place.
E is a straight-shooting bolt which rests in the front end of the keeper, and G is an up-A right dog, made solid with the bolt and moving with it. The bolt, when fully thrown inward, strikes into a socket, d. of the upper sash, and thus locks the two sashes together, and when fully thrown outward it releases the upper sash and allows either sash to be operated independently.
The dog has upon its upper end a hookshaped head,f, the point of which strikes under a shoulder, g, of a plate, H, attached in the running groove of the jamb, said engage ment taking place when the sashes are both fully closed. In this condition the dog locks the lower sash from being raised, while the bolt locks the two sashes together, preventing the lower one from being raised or the upper one from being lowered.
the under side to admit the bolt, and is also open at the top, except the two side bearings, h h, and a dividing-bearing, c', which, however, extends but partially around the bolt, leaving a throat, k, on the back side for the dog to pass through when thrown back to retract the bolt. In line with this center bearing is also a raised lug, m, on top of the plate, as shown in Fig. 3.
By this means-two guiding-slots are formed for the dog in swinging, one of which holds the bolt forward in the locked position, and the other holds it back in the unlocked position.
When the dog is raised into engagementv with its catch it is held by bearing i, so that the bolt cannot be thrown, and when thrown fully back, as shown in dotted lilies, it is also .held by lug m, so that the bolt cannot strike the upper sash when the lower one is raised.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim is- The saslrlock consisting of' the plate D, the bolt E, and the dog Gr, the dog being attached to the bolt, and provided with the'head j', engaging with the plate H, and so arranged, as herein described, that the bolt Ahas a sliding movement to lock the two sashes together and the dog has a swinging movement to lock the lower sash to the jamb, as specitied.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my naine in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EBEB C. BYAM.
