IMPROVEMENT IN DOOR AND WINDOW F ASTENINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 199,685, dated January 29, 1878; application filed October 17, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HJALMAR BERGMAN, of Stockholm, in Sweden, have invented a new and Improved Door and Window Look, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a sectional side elevation of my improved door and window lock. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are vertical, transverse, and horizontal sections of the same, the horizontal sections being taken, respectively, on lines as w and 3/ y, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a front View of the recessed face-plate of the jamb.
The invention relates to and consists in a novel device bywhich the door is pressed and tightly closed against the jamb also, in a peculiar latch or segmental bolt for holding the locking device in the required position, all as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
The construction and arrangementbf parts Figs. 1, 2, and 3, so as to retain thereby the @Iteferringf? to the drawings, A represents. a segmental bolti that is keyed to the spindle are as follows of 'my improved door or window lock, which spindle is,operated by exterior knobs, lever-handles, or other suitable devices. The bolt A is either thrown by turning theispindle into a mortise, a, of the door or window jamb, or withdrawn therefromfaccording fas the door or window is to be'jlclosed or opened. The mortise a is provided with a recessed face-plate, B, that may be accurately adjusted to the bolt by means of slots and fastening-screws, to provide for any change in the door or window by the drying of the wood; or the face-plate may be directly fastened to the jamb and supported by a flange in the re-.
latch, substantially in the manner and for the .cessed port-ion of the same.
The face-flange'has a recess, 12, which has at that side against which the bolt bears a slight inward inclination, as shown in Fig. 5, so that the bolt, in closing, passes along the inclined side andpresses the door or window inwardly,
Fig. 1. By turning the key in opposite direction, the latch is returned into the position shown by dotted lines, so as to admit the withdrawing of the bolt and the opening of the door.
The position and extent of motion of the latch O are controlled by a spring, d, that enters byaproj ection or tooth, d into the grooves d of the upper arm of the latch, as shown in latch whether it is thrown into position to bear on the bolt or to release the same.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The face-plate having a slot or recess, with inclined side or edge, to adapt it to cause a door to close tightly when the latch or bolt is turned or forced down, as shown and described. I
2. In a door and window lock, the combination of a segmental bolt of the knob-spindle with a fulcrumed latch, carried by a key over the bolt or clear of the same, the latch being lockedin either position by a toothed spring entering grooves of the upper arm of the purpose set forth.
. HJALMAR BERGMAN.
