DOOR-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed February 11,1907. Serial No. 356,858.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANZ GUsTAv SEYFFARTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door- Locks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in door locks and especially with reference to the construction of the latch bolts and cooperating devices, whereby the door, when latched, may be opened by merely pressing against the. same in the required direction and without the necessity of employing knobs or the like devices for operating the latch, and my invention consists in the construction, operation and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings,-Figure 1 is an elevation of a lock embodying my invention, with one side of the casing removed, and showing the pivoted keyactuated locking bolt in unlocked position in full lines and in locked position in dotted lines; Fig. 2 is a horizontal, longitudinal sectional view of the same, taken on the plane indicated by the line aa of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a detail vertical sectional view of the same, taken on the plane indicated by the line b?) of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is an elevation of a modified form of my improved lock, with one side of the casing removed; Fig. 5 is a similar view, showing another modification; Fig. 6 is a detail elevation showing another modification; and Fig. 7 is a detail sectional view, taken on the plane indicated by the line c-c of Fig. 6.
The latch bolt 1 is longitudinally movable, and is beveled on one side, at its outer end, as at 2, to provide a cam surface, which when the door is closed, strikes the usual keeper, not here shown, and causes the latch bolt to move inwardly, against the tension of its spring, to clear the keeper, the spring then returning the latch bolt to its initial position, to cause it to engage the keeper and coact therewith to keep the door closed.
The lock case 3, which may be of the form here shown, or of any other suitable form, is provided on its front edge or wall with an opening 4 for the passage of the latch bolt. Abutments 5 are on the inner side of said front wall, immediately above' and below the latch bolt. The latter has, near its straight edge 6, pivot studs or fulcra 7, which project from the upper and lower sides of the latch bolt, and when the latter is in its normal, extended position, bear against the said front wall, between the saidabutments and one of the side walls. Saidstuds enable the latch bolt to turn in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 2 to enable the door to be unlatched by pressure against one side thereof. The latch bolt is reversible, as will be understood, to enable the lock to be used on either rightor left-hand doors.
A follower 8 engages the inner end of the latch bolt, I
the latter being free to turn angularly with reference to the follower, and in opposite sides of the follower are longitudinal guide grooves 9, which are engaged by guide flanges 10, that project inwardly from the sides of the lock case. The spring 11, which normally projects the latch bolt, bears against the inner side of the follower. Said spring, in the form of myinven-Z tion shown in Fig. 1, is of inverted U-shape, one of its arms bearing against the follower and the other bearin against the key-actuated bolt 12. Said key-actuated bolt is pivotally mounted on a stud 13, has a cam recess 14 for the reception of the key, and has an arm 15. Near its pivot, the said bolt 12 has cam faces 16, 17, disposed at a suitable angle to each other.
When the bolt 12 is in unlocked position the spring ll. bears against the cam face 16. When the bolt 12 is turned by the key to cause its arm 15 to lie behind the follower, and hence secure said follower and the latch bolt in a projected position and against inward longitudinal movement, the spring 11 bears against the cam face 17. Hence the said spring holds the said locking bolt in either of the positions in which the same may be placed by the key.
In the form of my invention shown in Fig. 4, the latch bolt is indicated at 18, the follower at 19, and the spring which actuates the follower and latch bolt at 20.
The key-actuated locking bolt 21 is longitudinallymovable, supported by guide studs 22, and has stop studs 23 on its upper side to coact with a stud 24 in the lock case. Said locking bolt also has a detent projection 25 on its upper side. At one side of the locking bolt is a key-actuated tumbler 26, which is pivotally connected at its inner end to the lock case, as at 27. Said tumbler has a detention projection 28, on which a detent spring 29 bears when the locking bolt is in unlocking position. When the said bolt is moved by the key to locking position, the detent spring bears against 9 5 the rear side of the detent projection 25 thereof, to hold the same in such position. When the key is operated to move the locking bolt to unlocking position, it first acts on the tumbler to raise the latter and cause its projection 28 to release the detent spring from the locking nary form. 1. A lock having a latch bolt beveled on one side at its outer end, movable longitudinally and also mounted for lateral angular movement, a follower movable longitudinally with the latch bolt, and means to actuate said fol lower and latch bolt, substantially as described.
2 A lock having a latch bolt beveled on one side at its outer end, movable longitudinally and also mounted for lateral angular movement, a follower movable longitudinally with the latch bolt movement, and a spring to move said'follower and latch bolt outwardly.
3. A lock having a latch bolt beveled on one side at its outer end, movable longitudinally and also mounted for lateral angular movement, a follower lnovable longitudinally with the latch bolt, a spring to move said follower and latch bolt outwardly, and means to lock said follower and latch bolt when the latter is in projected position.
