SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,707, dated April 15, 1890. Application filed July 20, 1889. Serial No. 318.1571. (Model.)

Be it known that I, NIELs GEORG SEEN- SEN, a subject of the King of Sweden, and a resident of Stockholm, Sweden, have invented certain Improvements in Locks or Latches,
of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to locks or latches, and especially to such locks or latches as have gravity-bolts; and the principal object of my invention is to provide means for retaining the bolt in its locking position in its eye or socket in whatever position the article to which the lock is applied may be placed, thus preventing unauthorized persons from withdrawing the bolt by inverting or shifting the position of the article, or by similar methods.
My invention comprises, also, other features, that will be hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawingsl have shown my improvements embodied in several forms of locks and latches.
Figure 1 is a vertical section through the casing of a mortise-lock embodying my improvements; and Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the lock, taken on the line in Fig. 1. Figs. 3, 4, 5, and 6 illustrate another embodiment of my invention in a lock. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the lock-casing; Fig. 4, a horizontal section on line y y in Fig. 3; Fig. 5, a horizontal section on line -y y in Fig. 3, and Fig. -6 is a front elevation. This lock is adapted for use on drawers and the like. Figs. 7 and 8 illustrate thejapplication of my improved lock to the tail-board of -a vehicle, Fig. 7 being a sectional elevation, and Fig. S a front elevation, of that portion of the vehicle on which the lock is mounted. Figs. 9 and 10 illustrate the application of my lock to sliding doors, Fig. 9 being a front elevation of the doors, and Fig. 10 a horizontal section on line a s in Fig. 9. Figs. 11, 12, 13, and 14 illustrate my improved adjustable eye or socket, Fig. 11 being a side elevation, partly in section, and Fig. 12 a front view. Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, A is the lockcasing. B is a portion of lthe part in which the lock is mounted. C is a'portion of the jamb or door-post. D is the eye or socket which receives the bolt of the lock, and E is the key for operating the lock. a is the bolt, which is arranged to slide freely up and down in a compartment l) in the casing A. c c are apertures provided in the wall of the compartment l). CZ is a slot formed in the bolt a. Through the aperture c and into the slot cl extends the free extremity of a lever e, firmly attached to or forming a part of a boss f, into a square or other suitably-formed hole or recess in which ts the spindle of the handle or handles. The extremity of the lever e forms the point of support for the bolt a. h is a weight pivoted at h to the casing A and arranged to bear against a projection upon the lever e in such a manner that the said lever e will be normally retained in its lowest position-that is to say, that position in which the bolt and the handle or handles on the said spindle g are in the locking position. A suitable stop or stops is in some instances provided for limiting the downward movement of the lever e. Then the door is open, the lbolt CL is in its lowest position, and the lower end of said bolt is beveled or cut away, so that when the door is closed the bolt, by reason of the wedge-like action of the beveled portion, will be raised so as to pass over the edge of the eye or socket D, which is in the path of the bolt a, and to drop into the recess in said socket. c' e' are' tumblers, which are pivoted at t" to the casing A. In a case in which the door is arranged to turn upon its upper edge the lock is preferably placed upon the said trap or door while the eye or socket D is fitted into the frame p, or the said lock may be placed upon the said frame p above the lower edge of the said trap or door. In the case of sliding doors q, as shown in Figs. 9 and `10, the lock A is secured in onev of the said doors q1ike a mortise-lock, or on thenecessary adjustment of the eye or socket D in order to allow for shrinkage or warping of the doorsor of the posts or jambs without in any way diminishing the security ofthe fastening of the eye or socket to the door frame or jamb. The eye or socket D, instead of being fastened directlyto the door post orjamb C, as heretofore shown, is connected indirectly thereto through the medium of a plate fr', which islet into or countersunk in the said door post or jamb C, and secured thereto by means of two or more screws lr. In the plate 'r is provided a slot r2, of suitable length and width. s s are screws which pass through holes provided in the ange-plate D of the eye or socket D and through the said slot r2 in the plate r. The screws s are screwed into another plate 1f, placed behind the plate fr, which plate t serves as a common A suitable recess C is also provided inthe door post or jamb C, adapted to receive the plate/r and the eX- tremities of the screws s. By means of this arrangement the eye or socket D and the plate z5 can be displaced or adjusted in a vertical as Well as in a horizontal direction, as far as the dimensions of the slot Watford free play to the screws s. Thus, for example, the eye or socket D may bel adjusted in a case `where a mistake has been made in the mounting of either the eye or socket D or the lock through incorrect measurement, and also in a case Where the lower extremity of the bolt has been subjected to much wear and tear, or the door has sunk or warped, or the relative positions of the door audits postor jamb have become altered from anycause, suchas shrinkage or otherwise.
For casesin which the door has shrunk to a considerable extent through the drying of the wood or from other causes, so that the bolt would drop against the edge of the eye or socket, instead of enteringthe hole or aperture in the latter, I provide washers or distance-pieces u, (seen in Figs. 13 and 14.,)^having a slot or slots u', so that they can be IOO IIO
passed over the shanks of the screws s. The said washers or distance-pieces u are made of different thickness, and one or more may be inserted between the liange-plate D of the eye or socket D and the plateK 1', the screws s having rst been slackened. The shape of the washers a is such as to correspond exactly to that of the flange D of the socket D, and their front edges are beveled in the same manner as the front edge of the said eye or socket D. After the insertion of the requisite number of washers and the necessary vertical and horizontal adjustment has been made the screws s are iirmly screwed down again into the plate t, so as to rigidly secure the socket D in position. t
I have indicated in dotted lines in Fig. l1 the position that will be assumed by the washer u, although such washer is not actually shown in position in said figure. It is evident, moreover, that I may somewhat modify the construction and arrangement of my improved latch or lock without materially departing from Having claiml. In a lock or latch, the combination, with a gravity-bolt and the lifter for the same, of one or more tumblers having arms which normally engage a lockingnotch`in the said bolt the nature of my invention. thus described my invention, I

2. In a lock or latch, the combination,with a gravity-bolt and a lifter therefor, of one or more gravity-catches adapted to fall into the 3 5 path of the bolt and prevent its withdrawal when the lock is inverted, substantially as set forth.

The adjustable eye or socket, consisting of a slotted plate adapted to be secured to the 4o j amb or other part, a nut-plate under the said slotted plate, the socket proper having a flanged plate, and the 'screws which pass through the flanged plate of the socket and the slot in the fixed plate and screw into said 45 nut-plate, all combined and arranged substantially as set forth. v
