Description
(ModeL) E. A. JOHNSON.
ISASH FASTENER.
Patented Apr. 7,1885.
nvnmog:
BY MAM J ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN A. JOHNSON, OF ALLEGHENY CITY, PENNSYLVANIA.
SASH-VFASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 315,294, dated April 7, 1885 Application filed September 18, 1884. (Model) T0 aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWIN ALFRED J OHN- soN, of Allegheny City, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Sash Lock and Fastener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved device for locking the upper and lower sashes of a window firmly together and to the window-frame, and also for lockin g them in place when partly opened, thus preventing rattling, permitting ventilation, and offering increased security against burglars.
The invention consists in a casing adapted to be secured on one end of the top rail of the bottom sash, and containing a sliding boltf'projecting from one end of the casing and aswinging hook-bolt projecting from one side, both bolts being operated from the same knob, and the sliding bolt engaging with an apertured strip on the window-frame stile and the hookbolt engaging with a notched plate or strip on the upper sash side rail.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved sash lock and fastener, showing it applied. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the under side, the plate of the casing being removed. Fig.
3 is a perspective view of the bolt for locking.
the sashes together. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the bolt for locking the lower sash to the casing. Fig. 5 is a face view of the apertured plate on the frame, jamb, or pulley-stile. Fig. 6 is a face view of the notched plate on the upper sash. Figs. 7, 8, and 9 are modified devices for the same purposes.
The flat casing A, formed of a rim and a top and a bottom plate held together by screws, is provided with an end opening, B, and a side opening, 0. Asliding bolt, D, preferably having a squared end, is held in the casing and projects through the end opening, B. A pin, E,having a removable handle-knob,E,projeots from the bolt D through a U-shaped slot, F, in the top of the casing, the shanks of the slot being inclined to the cross-piece to lock the bolt in place. A spring, G, secured in the casing, rests and presses against the grooved inner end of the sliding bolt D,and presses the same outward, and also presses the pin Einto the shanks of the slot F. A horizontallyswinging bolt, H, pivoted in the case, projects through the side opening, 0, and has a rightangled upturned hook, J, with a beveledface formed on its outer end. A pin, 70, projecting from the bolt H, passes into a diagonal or in clined slot, L, in the boltD.
In the pulley-stile M a plate or strip, N, is countersunk, which is provided at regular intervals with apertures O, for receiving the out- N a series of plates, N, may be provided at suitable intervals, each plate N having a central aperture or notch, O, in its lower edge.
On the inner surface of the corresponding side rail, P, of the top sash a strip, Q, is secured in such a manner that its inner edge projects beyond the inner edge of the side rail, or is flush with a rail suitably recessed, the strip Q having notches R in its free or inner edge at the strip N.
may be used, having side notches, R.
The casing A is fastened to the top rail, S, of the bottom sash at one end.
The operation is as follows: The pin E is al- F, where it is held by the spring G. To unlock the sashes, the pin E is pressed out of the slot D is withdrawn from the apertures inthe stile,
of the slot F to hold the bolt withdrawn. the same time the bolt H is swung from the on the pin K. To look the sashes, the pin E is released, and by the action of the spring is moved in the inverse direction. The bolt D locks and holds the bottom sash in the desired position, and the hook-bolt H, engaging with the notched plate on the top sash, locks the top sash to the bottom sash, and by the beveled face of the hook draws them closely together when closed or when partly opened, thus securing the objects in view with simplicity of parts, cheapness of construction, and facility of operation.
Having thus fully described my invention, I
er end of the bolt D or in place of the strip and the pin E is passed into the other shank intervals correspondingwith the apertures of In place of the strip Q a series of plates, Q,
ways at the end of one of the shanks of the slot of the shank in which it is located, and thebolt strip Q by the action of the end of the slot L claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a swinging hookbolt pivoted at one end to abase-plate or casing and projecting therefrom at the other end,
. of a sliding bolt having its outer end guided E, projecting from the bolt D through the U- shaped slot F in the top of the casing, the spring G, and the swinging bolt H, provided with the' pin K, projecting through the slot L, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The combination, with asash, of a notched plate or strip secured to the inner surface of one side rail, the notched edge of the strip or plate projecting from or being flush with the inner edge of the rail, substantially as herein shown 25 and described.
