UNrrEn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GOTTLIEB GEHRUNG, OF JAMAICA PLAIN, MASSACHUSETTS.
FASTENER FOR THE MEETING-RAILS OF SASHES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 398,889, dated March 5, 1889.
Application filed December 22, 1888- Serial No. 294,405. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GOTTLIEB GEHRUNG, a
State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention relates to ini n'ovmnents in window-sash fasteners, and it carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the improved sash-fastener, shown locked. Fig. 2 represents an end View of the same, also shown locked. Fig. 3 represents a vertical section of Fig. 2, and Fig. l re iresents a vertical section of the device, shown as unlocked.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the different parts of the drawings.
In the drawings, (:1. represents the upper portion of the lower sash of a window, and 1) represents the corresponding lower portion of i ive sashes uatil the pawl (Z is manipulated the upper sash, as usual.
To the sash part b is secured in a suitable end at (Z' the spring-pressed locking-pawl d,
that is actuated by means of a suitable spring, 6, for the purpose of automatically forcing the pawl d outward to its locked position (shown in Figs. 1, 2, and as soon as it is released.
f is a spring secured to the lower end of the shell or frame 0, said spring having near its free end a projection, f, adapted to fit in a notch or recess, in the lower end of the spring -pressed pawl (Z when the latter is pressed inward, as shown in Fig. 4.
To the sash part a is secured in a suitable manner the metal block g, having in its upper part a concave or inclined locki ng surface, g, against which the lower end of the lockingpawl 61 is made to rest when liberated, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3.
The block g has a lip, g", projecting beyond the outer edge of the sash a, thatserves to trip the spring f when the sash b is moved upward or the sash a is moved downward to their closing positions, thereby causing the projection j" on said springj" to be moved out of the notch or recess (1 in the pawl (Z, and causing the latter to be forced outward by the influence of its spring 6 to the locked position shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3.
If the sashes are locked together, as shown in' said Figs. 1, 2, and 3, and it is desired to unlock them, all that is necessary to do is to push the pawl (Z inward to the position shown in Fig. 4: until the notch (1 receives the projection f on the spring f, when the pawl (I will be automatically held in its unlocked or inoperative position, and the sash u may now be raised or the sash lowered more or less, as may be desired.
It the sash a is closed and the sash l1 lowered. if it is desired to raise and close thclatter, as it is raised and when it reaches its closed position the free end of the spring f comes in contact with the lip or projection g" on the block g, causing the spring-pressed pawl (Z to be liberated and to be automatically forced by the influence of its spring 0 to the locked position shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, thus preventing the raisin g or lowering of the respectfrom the inside of the room, as above stated.
For the purpose of rendering the sashes dust, snow, and wind proof, as well as preventing their rattling in. windy weather, I prefer to make on each side of the shell or case 0 an i11- clined or wedge-shaped projection, 0, adapted to enter a corresponding]y-shaped hook, g one in each end of the block g, when the sashes are closed, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, by which means the meeting edges or surfaces of the said sashes are caused to be brought in close contact with each other when closed, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3.
Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent, and claim- 1. The improved sash-fastener, as described, consisting of the shell or frame 0 and its pivoted spring-pressed pawl cl, and the spring f, having projection f, adapted to fit in a recess, (1, in said pawl, combined with the block g, having locking-surface g and lip or projection 9', substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The improved sash-fastener, as described,
consisting of the frame or shell 0 and its pivoted spring-pressed pawl d and side projections, 0 c, in combination with the block g, having looking-surface g and hooks g g sub- 5 stantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses, on this 20th day of Docember, A. D. 1888.
OTTLIEB GEI'IRUNG.
