Application filed. December 28 To all whom it may concern: I 7
Be it known that I, WILBUR M. Rnioniinn,
'a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York ,and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVindow-Sash Locks, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to 'make and use the same.
This invention relates to window sash locks, and the object thereof is to provide "looked together and locked to the window frame when said sashes are partially open for the purpose of ventilation; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a window sash lock, constructed and operating as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanyingdrawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is an inside view of one side portion of a window frame, and showing parts of the upper and lower sashes and my improved sash lock in operation, part of the construction being in section; Fig. 2 a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 a sectional plan view of the construction as shown in Fig. 1; and, Fig. 4 a view similar to Fig. 3 but showing the sash lock out of operation.
In the drawing forming part of this specification, I have shown at a a part of one side of a window frame, the left side being selected, and at b I have shown the lower left corner of the top window sash, and at c the upper left corner of the bottom window sash. The top sash comprises the usual vertical side member 6 and bottom member 6 and the bottom sash comprises the usual vertical side member 0 and top member 0 In the construction shown, I have also provided the top sash member 6 with a vertical plate d which is countersunktherein and provided with bolt holes (Z and the side of the win dow frame is provided in front of the sash member with a similar vertical plate 0 which Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Get. 5, W315.
, 114. Serial No; 879,241.
is Lshaped in cross section and comprises a horizontal top member f adapted to rest snugly on the top member or rail 0 of the bottom sash, and a vertical member f which abuts against the front side of said sash or rail member 0 and the L-shaped plate f is secured to said rail or sashmember by screws 9' passed through theparts f? and f thereof.
The front plate member f is provided -in the top portion thereof with a deep longitudinal groove f in which is mounted a longitudinally movable bolt h which passes through a keeper 72. mounted on, or connected with the plate member 7' and the end of which is adapted to operate in the holes 6 in the plate 6 secured in the window frame, and mounted transversely of, and movable transversely of the outer end portion of the plate member 7' is a bolt 7; whichis held in place by a keeper i consistingof a plate secured to parallel block members a secured transversely of the plate member 7, and the outer end of the bolt cl is adapted to operate in the bolt holes d in the plate d.
-The front end of the bolt 71 is provided with a triangular head i having a diagonal slot 2' arranged at an angle of approximately forty-five degrees to said bolt 2', and the bolt in is provided with a stud pin k formed on or secured thereto, and which operates in the slot 2'.
A turn pin j is secured in the plate member f inwardly of the inner end of the bolt it, and this pin is provided with a hub 7' of the same thickness as the bolt h, and the inner end of the pin j is provided with a head j and mounted on said pin between the head thereof and the hub is a plate 70 provided with a cam slot 72 and the inner end of the bolt h is provided with a pin 70 which passes outwardly through and operates in said cam slot.
A lock pawl m is pivoted on the plate member f back of the inner end of the bolt 7b as shown at m and said pawl is provided with a nose-piece m adapted to engage the inner end of said bolt, and pivoted to the plate member 7 is a cam lever 12 having a cam head 12 adapted to operate in connection with the pawl m and said cam scription it will be seen that the turning of the pin 3 by means of the head j thereof will throw the bolts 71, and 2' into the operative position as shown in Figs. 1 2 and 3,
or out of the operative position as shown in Fig. 4, according to the direction in which said pin is turned, and the pawl m and cam lever a may be manipulated to lock the bolt h in its operative position, and this will also lock the bolt 2' in its operative position, and when it.is desired to throw said bolts into their inoperative position the cam lever n must be manipulated so that the pawl m 1 may be turned out of engagement with the inner end of the bolt it.
With this construction the .top and bottom sashes may be locked in the closed position, or both sashes may be opened to any desired extent and locked together and also locked to the window frame whenever desired for ventilation or other purposes.
My invention is not limited to the use of the pawl m and cam lever n for locking the bolts in'their operative position and any suitable means for accomplishing this result may be employed, and other changes in and modifications of the construction herein described, may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, I
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A window sash lock, comprising an attaching plate which is L-shaped in cross secother of which is placed on that part of said plate which abuts against the front face of thetop rail and is movable laterally and adapted to engage the adjacent-side of the window frame, the bolt which is mov able forwardly and back'wardly beingprovided with a head having a diagonal slot and the bolt which is movable laterally with a pin'which operates in said slot, means for operating said laterally V movable bolt in both directions by hand, consistin of a cam disk pivoted to the said plate an having a curved slot through which is passed a pin" connected with said bolt, said cam disk being provided with a handle, and means for locking said bolt in operative position. 7 V
In testimonythat'I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 24th day of December, 1914i.
