Description

(No Model.)
D. P. MORRELL.
SASH FASTHNER.
No. 257,048. Patented Apr.25. 1882.
- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL PNMORRELL, OF SOUTH NORVALK, CONNECTICUT.
SASH-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,048, dated April 25, 1882.
Application filed March 25, 1882.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DANIEL P. MORRELL, of South Norwalk, Connecticut, have invented an Improvement; in Sash Locks and Fasteners, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sash-fastener with my improvements attached. Fig.2 is a plan view of the same with the plate removed. Fig. 3 is the same with the bolts removed. Fig. 4 is a view of the bolts reversed. Fig. 5 shows the positions of the cam-flanges against the stops on the bolts.
My invention has for its object to lock and secure both sashes of a window in any desired position; and it consists of a combination, of devices hereinafter explained and claimed.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, 1 will proceed to describe the exact manner in which I have carried it out.
In the drawings, A represents the case of my fastener, which is secured by means .of screws on the upper rail of the lower sash in such a position as when the bolts are thrown they will be brought in close contact, one bolt with the casing of the window and the other with upper sash-rail.
On the face of the plate B, I secure the stud I), provided with a female screw in its end to receive the screw C, which holds the plate a in position on the case. Over the stud b fits the sleeve D, formed on the lever or handle E, thus constituting the stud the fulcrum of the lever. On the inner end of the lever, and around the sleeve D, is formed a plate, (1-, provided with the two cam-flanges e e of peculiar construction, as shown in Fig. 3. The outer ends of these flanges, if extended, would evidently pass each other and would not meet. The purpose of this construction will be hereinafter explained.
On the plate B are the studs F, G, and H, forming guides for the bolts F and G. Between the studs F and G slides the bolt F for locking against the window-casing, and which is bifurcated that it may straddle the windowcord in reaching the frame. The inner end of this bolt is provided on its under side with a (No model.)
projeotion,f, which fits over the cam-flange e, and .by which means the bolt is thrown or withdrawn when the cam is moved by the lever-arm E.
On the rear of the bolt, and also on its under side, I form the stop I to catch the outer end of the cam-flange e, and thereby arrest the movement of the lever-arm E to prevent the lever from coming in contact with the stud F, which might have a tendency to damage the stud or loosen the screws securing the fastener to the window. Between the studs G and H slides the bolt G, provided with a projection, f, on its rear and under side fitting over the flange e, by which the bolt is thrown or retracted, according to the movement of the lever-arm E. When the bolts have been thrown out asfar as desired the outer end of the camflange 0 comes in contact with the stop I, which arrests the swinging movement of the leverarm E and prevents it pressing against stud F, thereby avoiding danger of damaging the stud.
From this description of my invention it is evident that by a movement of the lever-arm E the cam -flanges c 6 will simultaneously throw or retract the bolts F and G at right angles to'each other, and by the projections f f acting as stops against the flanges e e the motion of the lever-arm E is controlled within .any desired limits, and by means of the lever the bolts can be pressed against the windowframe and the lower rail of the upper sash sufliciently tight to lock both sashes in any desired position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A sash-fastener constructed as described, consisting of the case A, provided with stud b, and the lever-arm E, provided with a sleeve, D, and'the cam-flanges e e, in combination with bolt F, provided with a projection, f, and stop I, and the bolt G, provided with a projection and stop, f, all constructed to operate substantially as and for purpose herein set forth.
DANIEL P. MORRELL.
