Description
M. E. PENQUITE. SASH FASTENER- APPLICATION FILED APR 25. 1917.
MHYNHR'D E .PENQUITE v I @313 ,(mt/
(1 Hot not;
Patented Sept. 7, 1920.
UNI-TED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' MAYNARD E. PENQUITE, 0F COLFAX, IOXVA.
SASILFASTENER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAYNARD PnN orTn, a itizen of the United States, residing at Colfax, in the county of Jasper a State of Iowa, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Sasl1Fasteners, of which the following is specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. I I
This invention relates to sash locks, and has'for its primary object to provide a device of this characterqwhich is simple and inexpensive in its construction and may be operatively applied to the window sash w thout necessitating any structural alterations whatever in the sash or the window frame. It is another and more particular object of the invention to provide a cevice of this character embodying a shiftable plate, and cam means for urging said plate into binding engagement with the window frame at one side of he sash, whereby said sash may be securely looked and held in various adjusted positions in the frame.
It is another important object of tl e 1n vention to provide a sash lock which is not accessible from the exterior of the window, and which may be advantageously used for holding the window sashes in closed position when they become loose or the sash cords break.
rind it is a further eneral object of the invention to provide devi e as above characterized which can used either upon Window sashes or doors as a detachable, auxiliary lock.
l/Vith the above and other objects in view, invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure l is a perspective view my improved sash lock applied to dow sash in its operative position;
showing the w n- F 2 is an enlarged horizontal sectional view; and
F g. 3 1s a section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2. i
Referring in detail to the drawing, 5 designates the body plate of the device which is constructed from a single, metal plate and is adapted to be attached to the face of the vertical sash stile by means of screws or other analogous fastening devices indicated Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 25, 1917. Serial No. 164455.
at 6. This plate is bifurcated, and the spaced arms 7 thereof are provided with angularly disposed terminals 8. The opposite end of the plate is provided with an outwardly pressed or offset, longitudinally extending, central portion 9- in which a stud bolt 10 is suitably fixed.
11 designates the locking plate which is of elongated form and is provided with an offset portion 12 longitudinally slotted, as
13. The offset 9 in the body plate 5 is disposed in this slotand serves as a guide for the locking plate. At the inner end of the slot 13, an angularly projecting lug 14 is formed upon the locking plate. A flange 15 is also disposed at right angles to the locking plate and projects in a relatively opposite direction from the lug l4.
16 designates a cam member which is loosely mounted on the stud bolt 10 bib-B811 the head 10 thereof and the slidable locl ing plate. This cam member is provided with'suitable finger pieces, indicated at 17, whereby it may be conveniently turned or rotated.
As seen in Fig. 1 of the drawing, my improved locking' device is applied to the sash with the lugs 8 extendi over the outer edge of the sash stile, saic L to being rigidly se cured by means of the screws 6 to the inner face of the stile. The flange 15 on the end of the locking plate 11 also extends over the edge of the stile. It will be understood that, if desired, one of the locking devices may be thus arranged upon each of the vertical stiles of the window sash. After the sash has been adjusted to the desired position in the window frame, the cam plate 16 is rotated and the edge thereof bearing against the lug 14: forces the locking plate 11 outwardly or laterally from the sash stile so that the flange 15 of said plate is urged into tight frictional bearing engagement against the base wall of the rabbet in the window frame. Thus, the sash will be securely locked or held against further vertical movement in either direction. It will be observed that the device being located upon the inner side of the sash stile substantially midway betweethe top and bottom of the sash, is not accessible from the exterior of the window, thus rendering the window sash substantially burglar-proof.
While I have illustrated my invention as applied to a window sash, it is manifest that the same may also be advantageously used as an auxiliary locking device for doors. 7 In such use the device need not be permanently attached to the door, but may be readily ap-' nevertheless, be held by means of my device against opening movement when subjected to ordinary pressure.
sion will thus be frustrated as the would-be intruder. will conclude that tne door is securely locked by other means which 1s inaccessible.
the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus fully described my invention,
The attempted intru--' what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is:
A sash fastener comprising a flat body plate formed at one end with spaced legs the extremities of the legs being angularly bent to'forrn lugs, the central portion of the body having an elongated boss, a locking plate disposed upon said body and provided in one end portion with a longitudinally ex tending slot slidably'engaging the sides of the boss, the lower surface of said end portion being engaged with the portion of the body surrounding the base of the boss, the other end portion of said locking plate having its lower surface positioned for engagement with a support or sash, the extremity of the last mentioned end portion being 7 formed with an'an ularl disposed lu and a J r t),
