Description
UNITED STATES- Patented December 15, 1903.
PATENT OFFICE.
SASH-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 746,764, dated December 15, 1903. Application filed July 29, 1903. serial No. 167,416. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM A. VANCE and TILLMANKNAPP, citizens of the United States, residing at Winnetka, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash- Fasteners; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in sash-fasteners, and has for its object a simple and efficient device for securing a storm window or screen in a window-frame.
With this object in view the invention consists in an arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a part of a window and frame, showing the application of our invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the device removed. Fig. 4: is a rear elevation thereof.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 6 indicates a window-frame, and 7 a window or screen sash. The device for securing the sash in the window-frame comprises an angular plate 8, which is placed over the corner of the sash, so as to extend over the side and inner edge thereof, as at S and 8", respectively, and is secured by screws 8. The face of the plate is flush with the surface of the sash. A tube 9 is formed on the portion 8 of the plate and extends into an opening 7 made in the sash. The inner end of the tube is closed, as at 9, while the outer end is open and flush with the face of the plate. To the inner end 3 of the tube acircular plate 10 is pivoted, having a cutting edge 10. The pivot-pin 11 of this plate extends within the tube to the outer end thereof, so as to be flush with the face of the plate 8, and is squared, so' that it may be engaged by a key. The
cutting edge 1O of the plate 10 is adapted to be extended through a slot 12 in the portion 8 of the angular plate and to be forced into the window-frame by rotating the plate 10 by means of a key placed on the pivot-pin 112 The plate 10 has a reduced portion 13, forming shoulders 14., adapted to cooperate with a stop-pin 15 to prevent excessive outward and inward movement of the plate. The opening 7 in the sash is made large enough to accommodate the plate when it is swung inward away from the window-frame.
The fastener being permanently attached to the screen or storm window sash, the screen or window can be readily secured in the window-frame without the use of any screws and without injuring or disfiguring the frame and also readily removed therefrom.
The fastener is placed on both sides of the sash, and the number required to be used on each side will depend on the size of the screen or window. i
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a sash and window frame, of a tube let into the sash, a rotatable fastener pivoted to the tube and having a cutting edge adapted to enter the window-frame, and a stem for rotating the fastener extending therefrom into the tube.
2.. The combination with a sash and window frame, of a plate fastened to the sash, a tube thereon extending into an opening in thesash, a circular plate pivoted to the tube, and having a cutting edge adapted to enter the window-frame, means for rotating said plate, shoulders on the plate and a stop-pin to engage such shoulders to limit the movement of the plate, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we afiix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM A. VANCE. TILLMAN KNAPP.
Witnesses: 7 WM. .1. ROBINSON, SIGNA FELTSKOG.
