DOOR-PLATE.
Application filed April 28, 1916.
To all whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL E. l/VILsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door-Plates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a safety appliance for doors, windows or the like and is primarily designed to provide a simple, cheap and effective device comprising two elements one arranged upon the movable member, such as a door or a window sash, and the other upon the casing for the movable member and which are adapted to effect an interlocking engagement one with the other when either the movable member or the casing therefor is surreptitiously tampered with, as for instance, when a jimmy is applied between the movablemember and easing.
Another object of the invention is to produce a burglar proof attachment for a door and the casing of the door comprising two members, one secured to the casing and the other secured to the door and the said mem; bers being arranged at right angles with respect to each other, both of the members being slotted whereby the member upon the door will pass over the member upon the casing, and the member upon the door having its slot provided with an inturned portion forming a tongue which is disposed in close proximity to the slot in the member on the casing, whereby when the door and casing are pried away from each other, the tongue of the door member will enter the slot of the casing member and so lock the door and casing, and the tongue of the door member being of a size whereby the same will readily become disengaged from the member upon the casing when the pressure between the casing and door is released and the door casings returned to their normal positions, so that a locking effect by the members will occur only when the door and casing are pried away from each other and also whereby the opening of the door under normal conditions will not be interfered with.
With the above and other objects in view the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appendedclaims.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 15-1 M916. Serial No. 94,199. i
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view illustrating the application of my improvement, Fig. 2 is a similar view but illustrating the arrangement of parts when a jimmy or similar burglar tool is inserted between a door and casing to bring the latching bolt out of its keeper and surreptitiously open the door, Fig. 3 is a sectional view approximately 011 the line 00-00 of Fig. 1, Fig. 4: is a perspective view of one of the members comprising the improvement, and Fig. 5 is a similar view of the other or co-acting member.
From the following description it will be apparent that my improvement may be employed in connection with any movable member having a stationary bottom, but in the accompanying drawings T have illustrated the device as applied to a door and to the jamb or casing for the door.
In the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 designates an ordinary hinged door and 2 the j amb or casing therefor. Secured to the inner face of the door at a suitable distance either above or below the lock and between the lock and latch when the door is provided with a latch, is a substantially rectangular plate 3. This plate has one of its ends projecting beyond the edge of the door, and the said endis formed with a substantially rectangular slot 4:. Extending inwardly of the slot and disposed centrally thereof is asubstantially rectangular tongue 5. Uponthe jamb or casing 2 is arranged a bracket member 6. This bracket preferably includes two angular members one of which, designated by the numeral 7, will be referred to as the face plate and the other indicated by the numeral 8, as the flange for the face plate. projecting a suitable distance beyond the flange 8 and this projecting portion is provided with an elongated slot 9. Both the face plate and flange are adapted to be received in a suitable mortise in the jamb or casing and the extending end of the said face plate is of a length to be snugly received in the elongated slot 4 of the plate 3 to dispose the tongue of the said plate opposite the slot 9 in the face plate of the bracket. When the members are in this position and the door, of course, closed upon its casing and an attempt be made to jimmy the door or to force the casing away from the door in order to surreptitiously enter the room, it
The face plate has one of its ends 5 will be apparent that the jamb or casing 2 being moved away from the door 1 will likewise move the bracket 6, causing the tongue 5 of the plate 3 to be received within the slot 9 of the face plate of the bracket, so that even should the dogging bolt or the latch bolt be moved out of engagement with its keeper the tongue of the member 3 engaging in the slot of the member 5 will prevent the opening of the door. It will be further apparent that when the jimmy is removed and the jamb or casing thus relieved from the pressure thereof it will return almost to its initial position, or sufficiently to permit of the bracket moving toward the door to bring the tongue 5 of the member 3 out of the slot and thus permit of the ready opening of the door after the bolts have been operated.
From the above description, taken in con nection with the accompanying drawings, the simplicity of the device as well as the advantages thereof will, it is thought, be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such invention appertains without further detailed description.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. In a device for the purpose set forth, a movable member and a stationary member providing an abutment for the movable member, of plates upon both of the members, one of said plates having an elongated slot to receive the projecting end of the second plate, said first mentioned plate having a tongue projecting within the slot thereof and the second plate having a slot to receive the said tongue when the abutment member is moved laterally from the movable member.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the 2. In a device for the purpose set forth, the combination of a swinging door and a door j amb therefor, of a plate secured upon the door and projecting beyond the end thereof, said platehaving its projecting end formed with an elongated slot and being provided with a tongue projecting inwardly 0 said slot, a bracket secured to the door jamb and having a projecting end adapted to be received in the slot of the said plate, said projecting'end of the bracket having a slot which is disposed. opposite the tongue of the plate and adapted to receive said tongue when the jamb or the door are moved laterally away from each other.
3. In a device for the purpose set forth, the combination with a swinging door and a jamb therefor, of a flat plate secured upon the inner face of the door at the free end thereof and projecting beyond the said end, the projecting portion of the plate having an elongated slot and having a tongue projecting within the slot, a bracket member comprising a face plate and an angle plate let into the jamb and secured thereto, the projecting end of the face plate of the bracket having a slot, said end adapted to be received in the slot of the door plate and to have its flange contact with the door plate to arrange the lug of the door plate in a line with the slot of the purpose set forth.
in testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
