Description

. PATENTED MAR.1'0,.1-908.
e. w; STEWART.
' S'ASH LOCK. urnxonlon rum) SEPT. 5, 1907.
GEORGE W. STEWART, OF FORT WAYNE, IXDIAXA..
sAsH-LocK.
i 0 all whom it may concern;
e it known that I, GEORGE W. STEWART, cit en of the United States, residing at Fort .Way e, in the county of Allen and State of India a, have invented certain new and useful Iriigrovements inSash-Locks, of which the foll wing is a specification.
The present invention appertains toa novel lock for securing window sashes whenclosed, or when opened to any desired point for ventilation, substantially as hereinafter claimed and as shown in the accompanying drawings, in which: I
Figure 1 is'a detailed perspective view of a portion of a window frame a portion of upper and lower sashes illustrating the applica-' tion of the invention. Fi 2 is a sectional casing.
is provided with a button 10. A slot is formed in a side of the'barrel or casing and view of a sash lock and hol er and portions of the sashes to which the same are secured. Fig. 3 is a detailed view of a blank from which the casing or locking bolt barrel is formed. F i 4 is a detailed perspective view of the 100 'ng bolt, barrel or casing ona larger scale.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same referencecharacters.
' The numeral 1 indicates a SlClu stile of the upper sash, 2 a side stile of the lower sash, 3
the meeting rail of the lower sash, and 4 a window j amb, all of said parts being of usual construction and arrangement to illustrate and demonstrate the application of the invention. 4
A plate or bar 5 is secured to the stile 1 and is provided in its length with a series of openings 6 for cooperation with a lock bolt applied to the lower sash. The plate or bar 5 welded into the stile 1 or applied to the surface thereof. The openings 6 register with corresponding openings formed in the stile 1 so. as to provide a horizontal space for a firm setting ofthe lock bolt and insure firm and positive connection between the compleinentar parts of the lock or fastener.
The ock bolt 7 is spring actuated and slidably fitted within the barrel or casing 8 attached to the stile 2 of the lower sash. An end portion of the lock bolt is reduced and receives a spring 9 which is confined between a shoulder formed at the base.- of the reduced portion and the outer end ofthe barrel or The projec-tingendof the lock bolt Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed September 5, 1907. Serial No. 391,480.
Patented March 10, 1908.
receives a pin 12 projecting'from a side of the"? lock bolt, said pin directing the lock boltanfd limiting the same in its longitudinal mov -5 .m'ents and, when entering either of the cross slots leading from the longitudinal member of the T slot, serving to hold the lock boltout of engagement with the plate or bar 5 so that either sash may be moved freely in the frame or casement. The barrel or casing 8 is formed with, lateral ears 12 which are apertured to "receive fastenings by mea-ns of which the casing is secured to the stile 2, and said barrel is provided at its outer end with a wing 13which closes the outer end of the barrel and overlaps a side of the stile 2 and isapertured to receive a fastening. The casing or barrel as indicated most clearly in Fig. 3 is formed of a sheetmetal blank having ears 14 and wing 13 forming an integral part thereof,
said blank being rolled or curved between its longitudinal edges to form the barrel and having the ears 14 outwardly bent and the wing 13 downwardly bent so as to close the outer end of the barrel. The inner portion of the wing 13 adjacent to the top of the blank is formed by the opening through which the outer end of the reduced portion of the lock bolt passes. A
1 When the invention is applied to the sashes of the window the strip or plate 5 is secured to the side stile of the up er sash and the casing containing the lock bo t is fitted to the upper corner portion of the lower sash a-djacent to the stile of the upper sash to which the strip 5 is fitted. Then the lock bolt 7 is drawn into the casing and the in 12 entered into one branch or the other 0 the T slot 11 said lock bolt is held clear of the plate or bar 5 and the sashes are free to move up or down.
. hen the lock bolt is shot into any one of the series of openings 6 the two sashes are made fast and cannot be relatively moved. hen the sashes are closed and the lock bolt-is shot into the lowermost opening 6 of'the plate 5 they are made secure and cannot be opened from the outside. Should it be required to open the sashes to a greater or less distance to secure ventllatlon they are relat vely fixed by shooting the lock bolt into selected open.- ing 6 thereby reventing further relative movement of tie sashes from the outside and preventing any one gaining access to the interior of the dwelling through the window.
From theforegoing it will be understood that the invention subserves a dual oflice of securing sashes when closed or with holding 'fied'the same comprising a casing forine same opened to an adjusted position thereby obviating the necessity for roviding a separate and independent sash olding and sash fastening means.
Having thus described the invention, what" is claimed as new is:
In a locking device of the character s eeid of a sheet metal blank having a T-slot ears at op posite sides and a Wing at oneend, said blank 'being rolled upon itself and having its ears outwardly bent and the said wing bent at a right angle to the length of the casing to close the outer end thereof and in conjunction with.
the aforesaid ears to form attaching means for'the device, and a spring actuated look b0lt slidably mounted in said casing and having an end portion passed through an opening formed in the closed end thereof and pro- 1 vided with a pin arranged to operate in the saidT slot.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE W. STEWART.
